Usher’s Gives Super Bowl Advice to Kendrick Lamar

The iconic singer shared his Super Bowl set experience on The Jennifer Hudson Show

Kendrick Lamar just got some high-powered advice for his upcoming Super Bowl LIX halftime performance. During a recent appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, last year’s halftime performer Usher was asked his thoughts on how Lamar can have the best show possible. His overall message was to be present.

“The one thing I would say is: Savor the moment,” he told Hudson. “You get obsessed in trying to build the best performance but you don’t realize that it’s really about enjoying it. It might not be perfect, everything might not go exactly the way it’s supposed to. But if you are in your mind and stuck trying to make something perfect you’re not gonna look up and smell the flowers and realize, ‘Wait a minute, I’m here!’ I get a chance to have this moment and I’m not gonna get it again.“ Usher said that he’s talked to everyone around Lamar, but they haven’t individually communicated yet.

Usher also told Hudson that he was “obsessed” while crafting his 13-minute performance, which took place on the most watched Super Bowl ever. He says he went through more than 100 edits before landing on the optimal set to highlight his nearly 30-year career.

Kendrick will headline Sunday’s Super Bowl halftime after sweeping the Grammys with five trophies for “Not Like Us,” making it the Grammys’ most-awarded rap song ever. The fiery Drake takedown also vaulted him to third place on the list of rappers with the most Grammys — he’s taken home 22 trophies.
