Girl Ultra can’t stand losing this ex-lover with a fabulous name. On Tuesday, the Mexican star released her new single “Tomás,” featuring vocals from Empress Of and production by one of her inspirations, Chromeo.
“‘Tomás’ is about the archetype of a man,” says Girl Ultra in a statement. “‘Tomás’ is someone we mourn, yet despise — someone we invoke through the repetition of his name. We want to move on, but we’re still attached.”
The Ricardo Martinez Roa-directed video sees Empress Of and Girl Ultra walking through a parking lot with a man’s face (presumably Tomás, who has no relation to this writer with the same spectacular name) held inside a jar.
Two doll hands hang from the side of the camera, creating the illusion that it’s Tomás (again, not this writer) following the women around the building trying to recover his face.
Girl Ultra recorded the song with Chromeo in their Los Angeles studio, using only analog instruments while embracing the duo’s “sleek” sound. (The video for “Tomás” ends with a snippet of Girl Ultra singing next to the EDM pair. Could more music be on its way?)
“Working with Chromeo felt like fulfilling a teenage dream. Growing up on the edges of the indie sleaze era in Mexico City, I was deeply immersed in it,” she said. “At 15, I used to save up to see Chromeo live, but I always dreamed of experiencing the bloghouse sound from a different perspective—beyond just being part of the audience.”
The new single follows Girl Ultra’s 2024 seven-song EP, Blush. For her part, Empress Of released her album For Your Consideration last year and joined Nliüfer Yanya on a remix of “Mutations.”
