But her musical interests are more deeply connected to delivering unique stories that find humor in dark situations. On the latest episode of <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2018s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-breakdown\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-breakdown\" data-tag=\"the-breakdown\">The Breakdown<\/a><\/em>, the Florida rapper explains how moving away from any preset expectations and carving out her own path led her to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/doechii-lligator-bites-never-heal-review-1235092081\/\">\u201cDenial Is a River.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI was really afraid of how raw and honest I was being in that record,\u201d Doechii explains. \u201cAnd I know that a lot of my fans really, really love that record because I made it humorous, but it actually is very, very dark.\u201d The song was inspired by a journal entry and the chronological flow of Slick Rick\u2019s classic \u201cA Children\u2019s Story.\u201d Doechii locked in with her engineer Jayda Love and created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/doechii-governors-ball-2024-the-green-room-1235038858\/\">gripping story <\/a>about finding out her ex-boyfriend cheated on her with a man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThis song is really just like people hearing how I am, the inner dialogue that I\u2019m having with myself. Like, OK, maybe you should really unpack that,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is an inner dialogue that I\u2019m having with the voices in my head. It just seems like I\u2019m less crazy because I do it with a funny voice.\u201d The approach gave her structure, but didn\u2019t take away from her strengths as a lyricist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLove, who watched the record pour out of Doechii in the studio, shares: \u201cI wasn\u2019t surprised to hear how honest she was. The only surprising factor of it was just how quickly it came about. She had to figure out her formula for herself. \u201cThat was my version of like, all right, I\u2019m gonna let everything go. I\u2019m getting sober. I\u2019m not talking to nobody. I\u2019m not talking to my label. I\u2019m finna be in my house. I\u2019ma paint and I\u2019ma write, and I\u2019m not talking to anybody,\u201d Doechii says. \u201cThat\u2019s me exploding, when I exclude myself and I shut down and I get in my hermit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhat she learned in the process was that making music was a way to streamline her healing process. \u201cI have to make music for therapy. And for me, that\u2019s my formula,\u201d she says. \u201cIf it blows up on TikTok, it blows up. But I can\u2019t make music from that place. It distracts me, and then I\u2019m not able to tell the truth. Sometimes, those formulas that fit for pop and radio and TikTok and the internet, you\u2019re making music for moments. Instead of making music for therapy, you dilute your message. You dilute your creativity.
