{"id":26080,"date":"2025-04-09T23:23:55","date_gmt":"2025-04-09T23:23:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/09\/def-jam-ex-president-kevin-liles-wants-sexual-assault-case-dismissed\/"},"modified":"2025-04-09T23:23:55","modified_gmt":"2025-04-09T23:23:55","slug":"def-jam-ex-president-kevin-liles-wants-sexual-assault-case-dismissed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/09\/def-jam-ex-president-kevin-liles-wants-sexual-assault-case-dismissed\/","title":{"rendered":"Def Jam Ex-President Kevin Liles Wants Sexual Assault Case Dismissed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFormer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/def-jam\/\" id=\"auto-tag_def-jam\" data-tag=\"def-jam\">Def Jam<\/a> President Kevin Liles says the sexual assault allegations <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/def-jam-kevin-liles-sexual-assault-lawsuit-1235282603\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/def-jam-kevin-liles-sexual-assault-lawsuit-1235282603\/\">leveled against him by a Jane Doe plaintiff <\/a>are \u201cpatently false\u201d and asked the court for permission to file a motion to permanently dismiss the woman\u2019s lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn a letter to a federal judge filed Tuesday, Liles\u2019 lawyer says the Jane Doe claims Liles sexually harassed and assaulted her between 2000 and 2002, but \u201coffers zero factual bases for her salacious allegations.\u201d The lawyer says the woman\u2019s complaint includes only \u201cthreadbare assertions\u201d without describing what Liles purportedly said to her in Universal Music Group\u2019s offices more than 20 years ago or what he did when she purportedly rebuffed his advances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cPlaintiff offers no detail whatsoever regarding the nature of the purported assault she suffered,\u201d Liles\u2019 lawyer Krystal C. Durham says in the letter obtained by <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cShe alleges that at unspecified times, and in unspecified locations, during a two-year window \u2013 again, over twenty years ago \u2013 Mr. Liles sexually harassed and assault her. She fails, however, to explain when these purported acts occurred, where in UMG\u2019s offices they occurred, identify a single person she reported this information to, or who was present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe lawyer claims the complaint is too deficient to survive because the woman further failed to give a date, location, or context for her \u201cserious\u201d allegation that Liles forced himself on her. \u201cShe, again, provides no detail regarding the purported event and submits only the bare conclusion that Mr. Liles\u2019s alleged conduct amounted to rape and sexual assault,\u201d the lawyer wrote, claiming the Jane Doe \u201cneither reported to nor worked for\u201d Liles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDurham wrote that Liles\u2019 proposed motion to dismiss also would challenge the Jane Doe\u2019s right to file her lawsuit under the two-year lookback window provided by New York City\u2019s Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Law. Other defendants in similar cases have likewise challenged the GMVL, claiming New York\u2019s statewide Adult Survivors Act pre-empted any overlapping local laws and closed the revival window for good on any claims throughout the state when it expired in November 2023. UMG Recordings, meanwhile, filed a similar letter Tuesday asking for leave to file its own dismissal motion. The company\u2019s lawyers argued that UMGR is \u201ca music company, and the alleged conduct was indisputably not in furtherance of any business of UMGR.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn her lawsuit, the Jane Doe alleged she was hired by the corporate defendants in 1999, with Liles acting as her supervisor. She alleged Liles sexually harassed her on numerous occasions during her tenure, including one time when Liles allegedly \u201cpressed his body against [her] breasts,\u201d and \u201cgrabbed [her] on the buttocks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tShortly after Jane Doe filed her lawsuit, Liles vehemently denied the allegations. \u201cI absolutely\u00a0deny the outrageous claims reported in the press this\u00a0evening,\u201d he said in a statement to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cAfter nearly 40 years of service to our culture, I\u2019ve intentionally built a reputation for doing things the right\u00a0way, treating people the right way, and empowering women.
