(<em>Rolling Stone<\/em> placed it #2 on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/100-greatest-neil-young-songs-1266840\/ambulance-blues-2-1269635\/\">our 2021 list of Young\u2019s 100 best songs,<\/a> topped only by \u201cPowderfinger.\u201d)<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Neil Young &amp; The Chrome Hearts - Ambulance Blues (live, 2025-07-01, Stadspark, Groningen, NL)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/f9tR0QzDrDk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tTo be fair, it hadn\u2019t quite been 100 years since the song surfaced in concert. He last played it January 26, 2019, at the Pantages Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. But like the vast majority of live renditions of \u201cAmbulance Blues\u201d in history, going all the way back to the Bottom Line in 1974, that one was solo acoustic. He didn\u2019t do it with a band until R.E.M convinced him to play it with them at the 1998 Bridge School Benefit.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Neil Young - Ambulance Blues - 10\/17\/1998 - Shoreline Amphitheatre\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bCQisTEdBwY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t know how we did that,\u201d R.E.M. bassist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/100-greatest-neil-young-songs-1266840\/ambulance-blues-2-1269635\/\">Mike Mills told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> in 2023.<\/a> \u201cNeil was just into it. I think he was glad to have an outlet where he felt like he could play it and do it justice, which is of course a really nice thing to credit our band with, if I dare go that far\u2026It was a super fun thing and really great for [guitarist] Peter [Buck] and [touring guitarist] Scott McCaughey, who are Neil Young fans to the bone, even more so than myself and Michael [Stipe]. It was a real thrill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cAmbulance Blues\u201d was regularly played at solo acoustic shows in 1999 and 2007\/08, but Young didn\u2019t perform it with a band again until January 25, 2016, at a private show in Paris for Carmignac CEO \u00c9douard Carmignac. That means this newest one in the Netherlands is just the third time in history he\u2019s done it with a band.
