But country songs of dissent, that dare to question or call out the nation\u2019s flaws, require some digging \u2014 unless you <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dontrocktheinbox.com\/p\/put-a-record-on-an-anti-patriotic?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email\">subscribe<\/a> to Don\u2019t Rock the Inbox, which this week shared an expertly curated <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/playlist\/1GmOqhJ3x7gHtMeJMk42nQ?si=kNbC-w1fQpaPwfwiZO4Oig\">\u201cAnti-Patriotic Playlist.\u201d <\/a>Add Nashville singer-songwriter Matthew <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/szlachetka\/\" id=\"auto-tag_szlachetka\" data-tag=\"szlachetka\">Szlachetka<\/a> and his song \u201cun-American Dream\u201d to that list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWritten with Paul Stephens and performed by Szlachetka (he makes music under his Polish surname), \u201cun-American Dream\u201d takes an unflinching look at the current state and direction of the country. It\u2019s not a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/country-music-get-along-songs-decade-925540\/\">\u201clet\u2019s get along\u201d song<\/a>, but rather one that boldly says this shit ain\u2019t right. What drives the point home, however, is the songwriters\u2019 gratitude that Stephens\u2019 grandfather, on whom the song is based, isn\u2019t around to witness this mess.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cGlad he didn\u2019t live to see this world gone crazy,\u201d Szlachetka sings. \u201cGrandpa didn\u2019t bleed for this world gone crazy un-American dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SZLACHETKA &quot;un-American Dream&quot; LYRIC VIDEO\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Eh1fzgLhhoQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAt other points, however, he and Stephens acknowledge the great American myth of nostalgia: \u201cIt was all apple pie and Chevrolet\/Even the lies were better back in the day,\u201d goes one verse. \u201cI can hear him laughing at this fool\u2019s parade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWe originally wrote it back in 2018, and though it was intended for my last album, I didn\u2019t feel ready to release it then,\u201d Szlachetka says. \u201cThe song carries a deeply personal message \u2014 one that\u2019s stayed with me all these years \u2014 and is inspired by Paul\u2019s father, Sargent Arbie Lincoln Stephens, a WWII veteran who served in Patton\u2019s 3rd Army in the 10th Armored Division. His courage, humility, and moral compass are at the heart of this piece. Now focusing on songwriting and producing, he hosts one of Nashville\u2019s best live music nights, the Greasy Chicken Review, held every second Tuesday at East Nashville\u2019s Eastside Bowl.
