Their innate gifts for harmony, melody, and songwriting make their songs, especially those on the new album <em>Wild and Clear and Blue<\/em>, all but irresistible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019ve just lived so much life together, much more life together than we had on our first record,\u201d the band\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/sarah-jarosz\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sarah-jarosz\" data-tag=\"sarah-jarosz\">Sarah Jarosz<\/a> tells <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cThis [album], we know what our sound is, and now what do we want to say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAt 11:30 p.m., the group emerged behind a lone microphone at the intimate 1913 opera house on North Oak Street. The gorgeous \u201cYear After Year\u201d hushed the audience, focusing them squarely on members Jarosz, Aoife O\u2019Donovan, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/sara-watkins\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sara-watkins\" data-tag=\"sara-watkins\">Sara Watkins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThings will never be the same\/as they were when we were young,\u201d Watkins sang. \u201cLet\u2019s welcome the change\/no song unsung.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI love singing with them so much,\u201d Watkins says of her bandmates. \u201cOne of the main things I remember from that first meetup was just how easy it was to communicate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe initial meetup occurred right around the corner from the opera house in nearby Elks Park. It was during the 2014 Telluride Bluegrass Festival. The three musicians were each performing at the gathering with various projects and were asked to host a workshop in the park.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"I&#039;m With Her - Ancient Light (Live at Sunset Sound)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8wZVkEnKqYc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIt just happened that the three of us were the ones who could work something up beforehand,\u201d Jarosz recalls. \u201cWe met up behind the main stage earlier that day and that was the first time we sang together. That harmony was so magical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThe thing I like most about our band is that it\u2019s not always the same blend. Who\u2019s singing high? Who\u2019s singing low? Who\u2019s singing harmony?\u201d O\u2019Donovan says. \u201cSo, you end up having all these color combinations. The members are well-aware of their chemistry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s this ease of working together,\u201d Watkins says. \u201cIt\u2019s just a very natural working environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhile I\u2019m With Her may have some elements in common with other harmony-based bands, like Crosby, Stills &amp; Nash, there\u2019s none of the rock &amp; roll baggage and expectations that plagued some of the greats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cOnce we decided to become a band, it\u2019s kind of what we always hoped it could be,\u201d Jarosz says. \u201cThis band we could return to when we wanted to, and not something we had to do. I think that\u2019s why it\u2019s so enjoyable, because it\u2019s this bonus musical experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe day before the opera house gig, O\u2019Donovan is sitting in the lobby of the Camel\u2019s Garden Hotel in downtown Telluride. Later that afternoon, the trio will hop onto the festival\u2019s large main stage, their melodies radiating out into the towering box canyon surrounding the town. And right after the workshop, Chris Thile texted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThile, frontman for the Punch Brothers, asked the group if they wanted to open for him at the opera house that night. It was the Sunday evening sendoff for the festival, a tradition Thile and his bandmates have held for several years. (To note, Watkins is part of Nickel Creek with Thile, and O\u2019Donovan and Jarosz were regular performers\u00a0on\u00a0Thile\u2019s radio variety show\u00a0<em>Live From Here<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWe didn\u2019t have any repertoire,\u201d O\u2019Donovan chuckles. \u201cWe got to the gig early. We went into the bathroom and worked up a bunch of songs.\u201d Among them, Bill Monroe\u2019s \u201cBlue Moon of Kentucky\u201d and Watkin\u2019s \u201cLong Hot Summer Days.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"I&#039;m With Her - Year After Year (Lyric Video)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BJi1n2Oa8yQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIt was electric,\u201d O\u2019Donovan says. \u201cThe next day, Sara Watkins texted, \u2018I feel like this should be a thing.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe group released their debut album, <em>See You Around<\/em>, in 2018. They won the Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song for \u201cCall My Name\u201d in 2020. Jarosz and Watkins are in front of the hotel, ready to go for a quick hike together before their set. Exiting the hotel, the group disappears down San Juan Avenue toward the mountains cradling the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cPeople have passed on. New lives have come into this world. Families have grown,\u201d Jarosz says. \u201cAnd we\u2019ve all kind of experienced that together.
