{"id":39101,"date":"2025-07-09T15:25:57","date_gmt":"2025-07-09T15:25:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/09\/why-john-fogerty-still-isnt-satisfied-with-ccrs-fortunate-son\/"},"modified":"2025-07-09T15:25:57","modified_gmt":"2025-07-09T15:25:57","slug":"why-john-fogerty-still-isnt-satisfied-with-ccrs-fortunate-son","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/09\/why-john-fogerty-still-isnt-satisfied-with-ccrs-fortunate-son\/","title":{"rendered":"Why John Fogerty Still Isn&#8217;t Satisfied With CCR&#8217;s &#8216;Fortunate Son&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/creedence-clearwater-revival\/\">Creedence Clearwater Revival<\/a>&#8216;s eight-times-platinum anti-war song &#8220;Fortunate Son&#8221; was their <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/creedence-clearwater-revival-1969-songs\/\">fifth and final<\/a> Top 40 smash of 1969. <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/john-fogerty\/\">John Fogerty<\/a> still isn&#8217;t happy with it. <\/p>\n<p>The band had rushed right back in the studio following the August 1969 release of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/ccr-green-river\/\">Green River<\/a><\/em>, and Fogerty was pushing himself to the limit. By October, Creedence Clearwater Revival had issued <em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/creedence-clearwater-revival-willy-and-the-poor-boys\/\">Willy and the Poor Boys<\/a><\/em>, also home to the hit single &#8220;Down on the Corner.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The basic tracks for &#8216;Down on the Corner&#8217; and &#8216;Fortunate Son&#8217; were both recorded, and one afternoon I went over to Wally Heider&#8217;s studio to finish the songs,&#8221; Fogerty told the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/music\/story\/2025-07-03\/john-fogerty-fortunate-son-donald-trump-creedence-clearwater-revival\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Times<\/a><\/em>. &#8220;For &#8216;Down on the Corner,&#8217; I did the maracas and the middle solo part, then sang all the background vocals then sang the lead. So I&#8217;d been singing at the top of my lungs for probably an hour and a half, then I had to go back and finish &#8216;Fortunate Son.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/creedence-clearwater-revival-albums-ranked\/\">Ranking Every Creedence Clearwater Revival Album<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some contemporary singers were known to have purposely worn down their voices to achieve the desired studio roughness, but Fogerty argues that his subsequent performance on &#8220;Fortunate Son&#8221; still feels off. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was screaming my heart out, doing the best I could, but later I felt that some of the notes were a little flat \u2014 that I hadn&#8217;t quite hit the mark,&#8221; Fogerty said. &#8220;I always sort of cringed about that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><strong>Watch Creedence Clearwater Revival\u2019s \u2018Fortunate Son\u2019 Video<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;Fortunate Son&#8217; Soars Into the Top 5<\/h3>\n<p>Despite his misgivings, &#8220;Fortunate Son&#8221; would become a No. 3 hit \u2013 and a standard element of protest rallies and his many concerts. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I know that in the case of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/the-beatles\/\">Beatles<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/john-lennon\/\">John [Lennon]<\/a> would just sit in the studio screaming and screaming until his voice got raw enough, then he&#8217;d record some takes,&#8221; Fogerty acknowledged. &#8220;Perhaps the fact that it was a little out of tune made it \u2014 what&#8217;s the word? \u2014 more pop-worthy. I don&#8217;t know.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He took another shot at getting it right on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/john-fogerty-legacy-album\/\">Legacy: The Creedence Clearwater Revival Years<\/a><\/em>, a forthcoming 20-song collection featuring remakes of some of Fogerty&#8217;s best-known songs.
