{"id":40582,"date":"2025-07-10T12:12:52","date_gmt":"2025-07-10T12:12:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/10\/eagles-guitarist-bernie-leadon-is-making-music-again\/"},"modified":"2025-07-10T12:12:52","modified_gmt":"2025-07-10T12:12:52","slug":"eagles-guitarist-bernie-leadon-is-making-music-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/10\/eagles-guitarist-bernie-leadon-is-making-music-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Eagles Guitarist Bernie Leadon Is Making Music Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tRight before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/eagles-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_eagles-2\" data-tag=\"eagles-2\">Eagles<\/a> played the final encore of their two-year, 109-date History of the Eagles tour in July 2015, Glenn Frey walked up to guitarist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/bernie-leadon\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bernie-leadon\" data-tag=\"bernie-leadon\">Bernie Leadon<\/a> and gave him a big hug. Leadon is the band\u2019s founding guitarist, and co-writer of many of their early songs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/the-40-greatest-eagles-songs-779880\/\">including \u201cWitchy Woman,\u201d<\/a> but he left in 1975 following an infamous backstage fight where he poured a beer on Frey\u2019s head. And now here they were embracing following their first tour together in 40 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cHe said, \u2018It\u2019s been great having you out here, and it\u2019s not over,&#8217;\u201d says Leadon. \u201cAnd then he hugged me again and repeated it. We then walked onstage and played the last encore of the tour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn a better world, this would have marked the beginning of a new chapter of Eagles history where all the original members returned to the group for a series of albums and tours over the past decade. In this world, Frey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/glenn-frey-eagles-guitarist-dead-at-67-203912\/\">died<\/a> from pneumonia just six months later, and founding bassist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/randy-meisner-eagles-dead-obituary-1234796423\/\">Randy Meisner died<\/a> from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in 2023, having not toured with the band since his departure in 1977. Don Henley is now the only OG member still in the fold, though guitarist Joe Walsh and bassist Timothy B. Schmit have both been in the band since the Seventies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLeadon has been on the sidelines throughout the last decade of Eagles history, but his time on the road with the group between 2013 and 2015 reignited something inside him. He began writing songs, including \u201cToo Many Memories,\u201d releasing next week, for the first time since his 2004 solo LP, <em>Mirror.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cToo Many Memories\u201d is a tender piano ballad about coming to terms with the past, and finding contentment in the present. \u201cToo many memories of another life,\u201d Leadon sings. \u201cToo many memories\/And it cuts like a knife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe lyrics came to Leadon in a sudden flash about three years ago. \u201cI\u2019ve lived many lifetimes in one lifetime,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve lived in five or six different cities in America, on both coasts. I\u2019ve had a lot of different experiences. And the conclusion to the song is that I need to let it all go and melt like rising fog off the meadow. Ultimately, I do think we do have to let a lot of stuff go. They maintained a close friendship after Leadon left the band, and worked together on a series of albums in England. Last July, Johns visited Leadon at his home studio in Memphis. \u201cHe was supposed to come and do a John Hiatt record, and it didn\u2019t wind up happening,\u201d says Leadon. \u201cAnd one day he was like, \u2018Maybe I\u2019ll just come over and we\u2019ll do some recordings anyway.\u2019 And we did like eight songs in five days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThey were joined at the session by bassist Glenn Worf, drummer Greg Morrow, and keyboardist Tony Harrell. \u201cWe did it all together, sitting in one room, looking at each other, listening to each other,\u201d says Leadon. \u201cAnd we did it all analog, which forces you to make decisions. There\u2019s a discipline that happens when you record that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLeadon isn\u2019t sure when he\u2019ll release the other songs or cobble them together for an album, but he is booked for a rare solo show at Nashville\u2019s City Winery on Sept. 12 as part of AmericanaFest. He\u2019ll be backed by his recording band at that show and center the set around their new material. You\u2019re going to sing it, not me.\u2019 It would be interesting to try that because I bet half the audience knows the lyrics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI also might say to them,\u201d he continues, \u201c\u2018Hey, I\u2019m going to do \u2018Lyin\u2019 Eyes.\u2019 But I\u2019m only going to do my part. I\u2019ll sing the harmony on the chorus, but I\u2019m not singing lead.\u2019 That might be funny for a minute. That means he continues to derive income from their catalog, including the Eagles\u2019 compilation <em>Greatest Hits (1971\u20131975),<\/em> which remains one of the top-selling albums in music history. \u201cI came up during a point where the idea was you never sell your publishing,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd then people started doing it. And thanks to the History of the Eagles tour, he now has a solid relationship with Henley, and the other guys in the band. He hasn\u2019t been to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/eagles-heartache-tonight-j-d-souther-tribute-sphere-1235108664\/\">Sphere<\/a> to see his former band in concert, but he\u2019s not opposed to checking out a show, and maybe even guesting with them for a song or two, if invited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut that\u2019s not really where his head is at right now. \u201cI\u2019m just happy that my relationship with the band has been cleaned up,\u201d he says. \u201cWe stay in touch.
