{"id":40626,"date":"2025-07-10T15:40:37","date_gmt":"2025-07-10T15:40:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/10\/giveon-talks-his-accountability-era-and-making-beloved-album\/"},"modified":"2025-07-10T15:40:37","modified_gmt":"2025-07-10T15:40:37","slug":"giveon-talks-his-accountability-era-and-making-beloved-album","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/10\/giveon-talks-his-accountability-era-and-making-beloved-album\/","title":{"rendered":"Giv\u0113on Talks His \u2018Accountability\u2019 Era and Making &#8216;Beloved&#8217; Album"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEarly in our Zoom interview, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/giveon-twenties-music-video-behind-the-scenes-1235259535\/\">Giv\u0113on<\/a> takes from a moving vehicle, I ask him point-blank: \u201cWho hurt you?\u201d He\u2019s on his way to California\u2019s Lucerne Valley desert to perform songs from his excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/giveon-give-or-take-1373991\/\">sophomore album<\/a>, <em>Beloved. <\/em>Set on a reflective stage in the sand for a Spotify exclusive, he\u2019ll sing over a string section with violin and cello, three horns, two background singers, drums, guitar, bass, and keyboard \u2014 similar to how the album itself was made. With this rich backdrop, <em>Beloved<\/em> is full of next-generation, old-school heartbreak, channeling seventies soul across very modern songs about his dating highs and lows \u2014 mostly lows, and that\u2019s why I need to know what went wrong.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI feel like my feelings are always being hurt, but my feelings being hurt and <em>me<\/em> being hurt are probably kind of two different things,\u201d he answers. When I mention that that sounds like a mature differentiation, he says, \u201cI guess it\u2019s like I\u2019m in my accountability bucket now, so I\u2019m wording it like that.\u201d He tells me that he\u2019s often felt unappreciated in his love life, but realized he was pouring too much of himself into his relationships too quickly, making it hard for things to feel reciprocal. \u201cSo when there\u2019s an inconvenience, it would hurt my feelings more than probably the average person,\u201d he explains.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"GIV\u0112ON - TWENTIES (Official Music Video)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F5S0rnc3828?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn our four-star review, printed in the July\/August issue of <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>, I wrote that<em> Beloved <\/em>especially shines when it embraces how complicated heartache can be. There are songs where Giv\u0113on lingers in limbo, like the\u00a0 \u201cBackup Plan,\u201d where he watches anxiously as his lover quietly contemplates leaving him. And, Giv\u0113on tells me, it\u2019s all autobiographical. The album is colored by several\u00a0 of his relationships and has been tinkered with over the span of three years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tJust one of his former romances was relatively high-profile, with the singer Justine Skye, and onlookers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.complex.com\/music\/a\/tracewilliamcowen\/justine-skye-gets-candid-about-catching-ex-boyfriend-cheating-on-her\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">speculated<\/a> that it had a seemingly sticky end. When I ask him if love and loss in the public eye had any bearing on <em>Beloved,<\/em> he says, \u201cI was about to say, \u2018no, not really,\u2019 because my last public [relationship] was like four or five years ago. I was in a relationship\u00a0 after. But I think I\u2019m always \u2013 maybe subconsciously \u2013 influenced. Even my song \u2018Twenties,\u2019 that was just a bird\u2019s eye view of just the last decade. So there were multiple people in there. [A] thing that entices me to write a song is if I\u2019m feeling [something] and then I reflect on it and [see] I went through it multiple times, that\u2019s when I really know it\u2019s going to resonate with the public. I write the songs based off of\u2026it\u2019s all autobiographical. So then I\u2019ll get inspired to write something, and I\u2019m like, \u201cWait, I wrote this song already.\u201d So that means I was in a cycle. I was like, \u201cYo, if you still in this cycle, you got to look in the mirror\u201d \u2013 which I hate. But then I would look and be like, \u201cOh, okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI think this album [is] like a photograph. Once you look at a photo, you start noticing stuff you didn\u2019t see before. So after I finished this album, I was listening to it and looking at it was just like, \u201cOh, that\u2019s just not a person I think I would want my daughter to date.\u201d At that point, I got to just actually do the work. I\u2019m able to forgo accountability because I just have privileges, whether it\u2019s because of my talents or looks, my taste, all those things. So, because of that, sometimes I can avoid accountability because I can still get the outcomes that I want. So it\u2019s just easy to just be like, \u201cWell, it\u2019s just all a part of it,\u201d but it\u2019s like, no, you got to grow up at some point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>On the album, it sounds like you also pour a lot \u2014 perhaps too much \u2014 of yourself into the early stages of a relationship.<\/strong><br \/>I\u2019m a date-to-marry type of guy. I wouldn\u2019t have a girlfriend just to be like, \u201cHey, this is my girlfriend.\u201d So I think that\u2019s why it\u2019s so intense, because I\u2019m approaching it as if this is about to be my wife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>I thought about that when I heard the <em>Beloved<\/em> song \u201cAvalanche,\u201d where you essentially say, \u201cI don\u2019t even know you, but I\u2019m thinking about getting married.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>Yeah, I always do that so quick, think about the houses, the kids. Did you two have to talk about being as infatuated with a person in real life as you guys sing about there?<\/strong><br \/>Because he\u2019s in a relationship \u2014 he\u2019s just had a baby, actually \u2014 I knew that he\u2019s very grateful and very much in love, just in the way he talks about his lady publicly and even to me. I felt that way before, so I was able to just tap into and exercise that. But I think for other people\u2019s [music], I kind of operate a little differently. For me, I\u2019m like an album, world-building type of artist, so it\u2019s kind of a little different.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Do you see yourself having features on your albums in the future? Or do you think that it\u2019s always going to be so personal to you that you need to do it by yourself?<\/strong><br \/>If I\u2019m in a studio with someone and we\u2019re having real conversations, and then it naturally comes along, then [okay]. Me and Teddy are full-blown friends now. I feel like the early features in my career were so organic to where it just sets the bar really high [to]being like, \u201cOh, yeah, I\u2019m not just going to do a feature just to do it.\u201d I also feel like some people just throw a feature on the album just for, I guess, name\u2019s sake, or for people to engage and be like, \u201cOh, this person\u2019s on this album,\u201d and then you listen to the verse and they\u2019re talking about two completely different things. It\u2019s like, why are you even on there? [For me] it\u2019s more on a friendship basis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>So does that mean you and Justin Bieber and Daniel Caesar are friends now, post \u201cPeaches\u201d?<\/strong><br \/>Well, yeah. I mean, more around that time though, because my life completely changed. It was like I was all over the place, running around here, touring here, festivals here. But around that time, yes. [Bieber] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/giveon-interview-heartbreak-anniversary-grammys-1233230\/\">FaceTimed<\/a> me and was just like, \u201cHey, what do you think about this?\u201d I was like, \u201cYeah, let me try it.\u201d So it would have to be on that rapport. Or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/giveon-heartbreak-anniversary-new-album-interview-1321539\/\">Drake<\/a>, it was like we would text and then it\u2019d be like, \u201cHey, let me try this,\u201d that type of thing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Did you record with the same instrumentalists for the whole album?<\/strong><br \/>Yes. Same group of guys. I wanted it to feel cohesive. Everyone has different play styles and sounds. If I just added a different horn player or different strings, I feel like it\u2019d throw off the cohesiveness of the album. So yeah, it\u2019s a family. I want people to approach it like it\u2019s our album. I like the idea where at the end of a movie there\u2019s just a million credits of people and each one of [them] are going to feel validated if that movie succeeds. They\u2019re going to be like, \u201cYeah, <em>my<\/em> movie won this award.\u201d That\u2019s how I want people to feel. I want them to take pride in it. That\u2019s why even on tour, me and my band, we just hang out, so they feel like it\u2019s their show, and then everyone plays better. I wanted to feel like I\u2019m <em>in <\/em>a band. I think it\u2019s like an only child who just wishes they have siblings. It\u2019s like I get to pick my siblings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>As an only child, I get that.<\/strong><br \/>You\u2019re an only child? I got so many siblings. My mom has four boys, and my dad has five kids including me. So three daughters and two sons. I feel like an only child in music [though], because I don\u2019t make a lot of music with my peers. I think it\u2019s just the way I operate because I legit want to be your friend first, and I don\u2019t take that word lightly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>Entertainment is also a weird industry to make friends in.<\/strong><br \/>It all happened for me so quick that I didn\u2019t lose my actual identity. So if I\u2019m in a room, I\u2019m approaching someone like, \u201cHey, what\u2019s up, man,\u201d normal. But it took some people a lot more time to get to the exact same spot, so they learn different mannerisms or different ways to move. So our hellos aren\u2019t even the same. The first take is I think it would be healthier to have multiple points of views. Because yes, it\u2019s about making good music, but we also go to artists to hear how they would look at something, their point of view. And I feel like the male point of view is missing. I guess that could be partially my fault because I haven\u2019t dropped. But I think it\u2019s important to have [both]. If a lady R&amp;B artist is saying <em>this<\/em>, I think it\u2019s interesting to have just the man\u2019s perspective, even if it\u2019s wrong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAnd I think this goes for more than just rhythm and blues: I just think we listen to the audience a little bit too much. Because of that, everyone kind of sounds the same. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s healthy for people to be making what they [think they] should be making. Just make what moves you, and if it moves someone, it moves them. If it sticks, it sticks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>What would you say that the same sound is? What are the trends that you\u2019re seeing that you feel like people can move away from?<\/strong><br \/>I feel like it\u2019s too digital. I feel like people need to move back to analog a little bit, live instrumentation. I [do] know how hard it is to do it, how expensive it is to do it. And I love a hip-hop\/R&amp;B influence. PartyNextDoor is one of my favorite artists, but we already have a PartyNextDoor. I just feel like if you point out certain artists, it\u2019s just that\u2019s their sound. There\u2019s not many R&amp;B artists with their own sound. They\u2019re just mirroring something that they think will work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhen you\u2019re going to recognize my voice, you\u2019re going to recognize my vocal delivery; you\u2019re going to recognize even my writing. And now with this sound [on <em>Beloved<\/em>], this is going to become my sound, contemporary, soulful\u2026I\u2019m stamping this. This sound is me because no one else is doing it. I think other people should do that as well. It would benefit them in the long run to find <em>their<\/em> sound instead of following the sound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHow this album is going to translate to the live show \u2013 I think it\u2019s going to be magical because the album was made live, so it\u2019s made to be performed live. It\u2019s going to be my best tour. I want to do strings, I want to do horns, I want to do background vocals, so I feel like [I\u2019ll have] a full eight to 10 piece [backing band], depending on how big the stages are. The album is really a movie, it\u2019s a world, and I want the night to feel like that. If it was up to me, everybody would dress a certain way, but I\u2019ll just heavily hint at it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>That reminds me of how everybody wears shades of brown to Victoria Mon\u00e9t shows. I feel like you could finesse that.<\/strong><br \/>Yeah, for sure. Because I want it to feel like an event. I remember I was on tour and when I was bored or traveling city to city, I would watch a get-ready-with-me or a vlog for that show [afterwards]. For me, it\u2019s like I get to the city, I get ready, I do the show, then I leave. It\u2019s like a three-hour experience. But what I realized is people wake up and their whole day is about this show. That made me perform even harder because I\u2019m like, \u201cThis is someone\u2019s whole day.\u201d I want it to be worth it. These tickets are expensive. I know how hard it is too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>How did you make sure that <em>Beloved<\/em> wasn\u2019t just a caricature of Philadelphia soul or Al Green or all these other things that already exist? It\u2019s clearly indebted to those influences, but it doesn\u2019t sound like a parody.<\/strong><br \/>I think that\u2019s just a natural thing from being a fan of music in general. I consume music across the board that I like and then at the end it creates this cocktail of my own sound. Yes, I\u2019ll listen to Teddy Pendergrass, but then I\u2019ll also listen to underground rap from Atlanta. And then on top of that I\u2019ll go listen to maybe one country song \u2013 I don\u2019t listen to a bunch of country \u2013 but then I\u2019ll bounce over and listen to PartyNextDoor. And then from PartyNextDoor, I\u2019ll go listen to Frank Ocean\u2019s <em>Blond. <\/em>Because of that, it\u2019s not like I\u2019m copying. Looking back on your twenties now as someone in your thirties , what are the things that you wouldn\u2019t waste your time with anymore? And then what are the things that you would do more of if you could go back?<\/strong><br \/>I think I wouldn\u2019t pursue someone just because I can see myself with them or because I\u2019m attracted to them. I value friendship with a woman. It\u2019s priceless. There\u2019s so much perspective. There\u2019s just a different grace. I have my guy friends, but my girl friends, it\u2019s just very valuable. But before, I would just be like, \u201cOh, I\u2019m attracted to this girl and we could get along.\u201d That\u2019s a friend though. You don\u2019t have to date every girl you\u2019re attracted to or that you like.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tI feel like that would\u2019ve kept me out of a lot of distractions. Everything else, I think I\u2019ve always just been very authentic and true to myself. I don\u2019t really let too much outside noise throw me off. I was never the type to say what I was going to do. I just end up doing it and that\u2019s when people would find out about it. So I like the route I took. If I started changing too much, then I wouldn\u2019t be where I\u2019m at today. And I love where I\u2019m at today. [I\u2019d] just [have] more friends instead of girlfriends. Just have a little more discipline.
