Is the Island Ready?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/bad-bunny-puerto-rico-new-album-acting-interview-1235227338\/\">Bad Bunny<\/a> made a statement when he decided to host a three-month residency at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/san-juan-coliseo-de-puerto-rico-bad-bunny-1234580104\/\">Jos\u00e9 Miguel Agrelot Coliseum<\/a>, right in the heart of his homeland\u2019s capital of San Juan. Starting this weekend, and for the next ten weeks, the global superstar will celebrate his most recent album, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/bad-bunny-debi-tirar-mas-fotos-review-1235226562\/\">DeB\u00cd TiRAR M\u00e1S FOToS<\/a><\/em>, with a series of shows, all under the residency name \u201cNo me quiero ir de aqu\u00ed.\u201d The name translates to \u201cI don\u2019t want to leave here,\u201d a nod to one of the most famous lines in his 2022 hit \u201cEl Apag\u00f3n\u201d and a political declaration about the displacement many Puerto Ricans are feeling the past few years. Celebrating Puerto Rico \u2014 its culture, its people, its spirit, its nature \u2014 is the album\u2019s strongest theme and one that seems to be the backbone of every creative decision he\u2019s been making since its release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFrom the beginning, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/bad-bunny\/\" id=\"auto-tag_bad-bunny\" data-tag=\"bad-bunny\">Bad Bunny<\/a> and Rimas have worked with Puerto Rico\u2019s tourism board to give the island a boost, but other establishments have also jumped onboard, too. Bad Bunny decided not to tour the U.S. in support of the album, instead encouraging his fans to flock to the archipelago in order to experience his show live. Quickly, people obliged: Scarlett Mac\u00edas, an attorney for the city of New York who is of Cuban and Ecuadorian descent, expressed that the album \u201cis very clearly a love letter to Puerto Rico and when I saw that [he] was doing a residency I thought it would be incredible to see him perform this album in the place that he loves so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHotels across the metro area, which includes San Juan and neighboring cities, are fully booked through September. The capital itself has announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DL7S7myvRcl\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">numerous events<\/a> with recreational activities open for visitors (and his hometown of Vega Baja is even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.primerahora.com\/entretenimiento\/otras\/notas\/vega-baja-lanza-tour-guiado-que-recorre-la-historia-de-bad-bunny\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">offering tours<\/a> of his childhood haunts), but most eyes are on the local scene itself. Puerto Rico will become the epicenter of Latin music for 90 days. What\u2019s the vibe on the ground?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAt El Boricua, the near-legendary venue in the R\u00edo Piedras neighborhood of San Juan, just blocks away from Puerto Rico\u2019s largest college campus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wjournalpr.com\/lifestyle\/entertainment\/to-the-sound-of-salsa-bad-bunny-celebrates-lightning-concert-in-r-o-piedras-in\/article_4b34a808-d43c-11ef-bc7e-efcd704051cc.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">(and the site of Benito\u2019s first post-album release block party)<\/a>, owner Omar Cruz is no stranger to showcasing local talent. The venue offers weekly nights of salsa, jazz, folk music, and more. The space has always been popular, but it\u2019s had a boost since January. \u201cEver since the album came out we\u2019ve felt a full reevaluation of our culture and identity, which has led to more events that highlight our roots,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tCapitalizing on that energy, he sprung into action. \u201cWith the help of the city of San Juan we\u2019ll be setting up a walkway where we\u2019ll be featuring numerous artists from the beginning of the residency until its end. This isn\u2019t limited to just the concert weekends, but for all [ten weeks.]\u201d It\u2019s not an easy task for them or any venue, but Cruz is prepared for the challenge. \u201cWe have to consider that this is the first time that an event of this magnitude has taken place in Puerto Rico,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tRaiven Avil\u00e9s, the proprietor of popular cocktail bar Barra Negra in Santurce, has noticed the atmosphere has shifted in the lead-up. \u201cThere\u2019s been more [walk-ins], and the mood has been more positive. [clients] wanna consume more, they wanna have a good time, they\u2019re asking about events that are going to be happening during the residency,\u201d he says. Mikey Cordero, who was born and raised in Brooklyn but moved to Puerto Rico in 2019, co-founded Defend Puerto Rico while still living in New York. It\u2019s a media collective that, in his words, \u201cdocuments Puerto Rican resistance, creativity and survival across the archipelago\u00a0 and the diaspora.\u201d Drawing from his own story and others, he\u2019s established La Sala Libre, or The Open Living Room.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThe sala is where everything happened growing up. Celebration, chisme, healing, planning, organizing,\u201d he says. \u201cSo I thought it would be dope to reimagine it as a liberated space for DJs, poets, conversations, teachings, storytelling and for community.\u201d Sala Libre will be open to the public every weekend from August through September at Casa Saffra, an Afro-Puerto Rican family-owned creative guesthouse and cultural space. \u201cWe\u2019re programming DJ open decks for local and diaspora selectors to throw down. Sala chats on displacement, queer futures, afro-boricua identity and more,\u201d he says, adding there will also be food and local vendors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI hope people take away that this is not just a place to visit. This is your home also, especially for the boricua diaspora,\u201d he says. \u201cI want diaspora folks to walk away feeling more rooted, more informed, and more connected; that they see Puerto Rico not just as a vacation spot, but as a living breeding place full of moments, memory, and resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAlongside a handful of independently managed spaces like these are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elnuevodia.com\/negocios\/turismo\/notas\/gfr-media-presenta-al-son-de-aqui-fan-fest-frente-al-choliseo\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">more commercial events<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sjciudadcapital\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">officially curated by the city<\/a>, inspired by <em>DeB\u00cd TiRAR M\u00e1S FOToS<\/em>. But whether this is the best way to take proper advantage of the moment is still a\u00a0 debate. Federico Fern\u00e1ndez, an event promoter and curator who cut his teeth in Miami before moving back to Puerto Rico and starting the \u201cIsla del Terror\u201d party series, worries people are taking the wrong message from the album and residency.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cLive music has always had an important role in the Puerto Rican music scene,\u201d he says. \u201cPeople like to see people play music, be it bomba, salsa, reggaet\u00f3n, rock, electronic music. [We\u2019re] just really into seeing somebody perform.\u201d His concern is that bigger events targeted at tourists could betray the idea behind Benito\u2019s album, or that they might hurt or hamper the local culture that the superstar hopes to highlight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tA new ordinance enacted in late-2023 by San Juan\u2019s mayor declared that the vast majority of venues in the city must stop selling alcoholic beverages at 2 a.m. \u2014 effectively forcing them to close at that time. It struck a blow to one of the hottest nightlife scenes in the Caribbean. As Fern\u00e1ndez tells it, efforts to work through it ended up coming up short. \u201cThe people, these promoters and organizers, they\u2019re realizing that they\u2019re in [denial] that everything sucked and the whole situation sucked, the curfew sucked and there\u2019s nothing fun to do anymore. And they\u2019re actively trying to change that, [and] I think the effort definitely this year is \u2018experiences\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut the emphasis on the bigger brand-friendly experiences, which benefit from larger budgets, dwarf some of the more authentic experiences that Benito has shared with fans. He\u2019s made it a point to highlight things like playing dominoes with locals on a random street corner, unannounced and chill. Even the album\u2019s now-iconic cover art featuring Monobloc chairs on a simple field where two people can just shoot the shit with a beer while listening to Ismael Rivera or DJ Blass classics (depending on their mood.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt\u2019s a sentiment shared by \u201cholistic curator\u201d Miosoti Alvarado-Burgos, founder of the cultural event aggregator \u00a1DimeloMio! which emphasizes local live music, galleries, workshops, and more outside of the tourist zones. \u201cThere has been a movement to make more experiences and live music events celebrating our culture, but I\u2019ve seen it move very slowly,\u201d she says, offering that she feels the residency\u2019s announcement and implications took many by surprise. \u201cIt\u2019s not enough; the events that are going to be happening are too generic. For example, most are just emphasizing salsa, bomba, and plena but without truly studying what else they can offer to surprise people.\u201d She thinks the events could also highlight newer talents within those genres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s been complicated because we offer more, because we know what\u2019s up, and it\u2019s hard for people here to believe that [visitors] would be genuinely interested in the music made here. We can offer such good rock, rap, hip-hop, electronic music, obviously good salsa, plena, also metal and punk,\u201d she continues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThat points to what is ultimately Fern\u00e1ndez\u2019s advice to those who visit Puerto Rico from now until September (or beyond): \u201cIt might be a better idea to just go and do your own thing, because you can go to a rave and you can see this and you can see that, but most of the cool stuff is super underground,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhile dozens of events have been earnestly curated to benefit visitors and local community, the signs exist that the tourism industrial complex might have hobbled their growth.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ recirculation-modules trending-in-article lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIf you\u2019re trying to go out and do the Bad Bunny Experience\u2122 it\u2019s gonna hinder your trip,\u201d says Fern\u00e1ndez. \u201cYou don\u2019t really understand the album if you\u2019re just looking for the Bad Bunny Experience\u2122 because Bad Bunny\u2019s not selling you the Bad Bunny Experience\u2122. He\u2019s telling you his experience as an individual, and he\u2019s trying his best to do it in the most authentic way possible. It makes way more sense to be hanging out at these [other] places which have way more influence than for you to come from the outside and try to colonize the experience,\u201c even inadvertently. As he bluntly puts it: \u201cI don\u2019t even think Bad Bunny would <em>want<\/em> you to go to his official afterparties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThree months is a long time, and may be enough to course correct as the shows go on,\u00a0 especially as word of mouth begins to spread after the first few weekends. While hundreds will undoubtedly leave Puerto Rico with a newfound appreciation of the breadth of its music and footprint, people like Cordero want to make sure the success of the residency is sustainable for years to come. He says he\u2019s thinking about the situation like this: \u201c\u201dHow do we seize this moment for what\u2019s really happening in Puerto Rico, for the cultural movements and the social justice movements?
