{"id":41358,"date":"2025-07-18T18:31:34","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T18:31:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/18\/alex-williams-does-hair-metal-as-outlaw-country-on-space-brain-lp\/"},"modified":"2025-07-18T18:31:34","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T18:31:34","slug":"alex-williams-does-hair-metal-as-outlaw-country-on-space-brain-lp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/18\/alex-williams-does-hair-metal-as-outlaw-country-on-space-brain-lp\/","title":{"rendered":"Alex Williams Does Hair Metal As Outlaw Country on &#8216;Space Brain&#8217; LP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAbout a decade ago, Nashville was breathlessly trying to find the next Chris Stapleton, who had just vanquished \u201cbro country\u201d and resurrected a more authentic country sound with his debut album, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/chris-stapleton-on-why-stunning-new-album-traveller-isnt-for-kids-176611\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Traveller<\/a><\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/alex-williams\/\" id=\"auto-tag_alex-williams\" data-tag=\"alex-williams\">Alex Williams<\/a>, an Indiana native with a mesmerizing, Stapleton-like baritone and a steely gaze, found himself in the middle of that search.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBig Machine Records signed Williams in 2017 and issued his debut album, <em>Better Than Myself<\/em>, that same year. He played a sold-out showcase at Nashville\u2019s Basement East and hit the road with Aaron Lewis, another Big Machine signee. NPR gave the album a splashy premiere, and  <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/review-alex-williams-better-than-myself-is-modern-outlaw-country-203087\/\">heralded<\/a> it as an example of a \u201creal storyteller getting his legs.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut <em>Better Than Myself<\/em>, while critically well-received, failed to become the next <em>Traveller<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Wild Side\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9_a-yTNW_Ik?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI had no fucking clue what I was doing. I was 27 years old, and the whole outlaw country thing, I was really into that stuff, listening to Waylon\u2026 but I\u2019m more of a hybrid thing,\u201d Williams says over coffee and surreptitious hits on a vape in an East Nashville coffeeshop. \u201cNow, I\u2019m trying to be more of myself and not worrying too much if it\u2019s country \u2014\u00a0because I\u2019m not, like, a country guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAs it turns out, he\u2019s more of a rocker, specifically the Eighties hard rock and metal that his father turned him onto as a kid. On <em>Space Brain<\/em>, his adventurous left-turn album out now on Lighting Rod Records, Williams pays homage to that music by covering the songs of bands like M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce, Poison, Judas Priest, and Cinderella. But this isn\u2019t a note-for-note tribute: Williams renders the songs as gritty, often brooding country odes. There\u2019s no hair spray, no spandex, and no glossy production. The bulk of the arrangements lean toward ballads \u2014\u00a0a way to emphasize the genre\u2019s frequently overlooked lyrics, according to Williams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI spent six months or so just trying to reimagine these tunes. Instead of country-leaning layups like Skid Row\u2019s \u201cI Remember You,\u201d Poison\u2019s \u201cEvery Rose Has Its Thorn,\u201d or M\u00f6tley\u2019s \u201cHome Sweet Home,\u201d he attempted to tackle bona fide rock songs like \u201cYouth Gone Wild,\u201d \u201cLook What the Cat Dragged in,\u201d and \u201cWild Side.\u201d Rather than crooning Guns N\u2019 Roses\u2019 ubiquitous 1988 ballad \u201cPatience,\u201d he opts for <em>Appetite for Destruction<\/em>\u2018s hard-partying \u201cNight Train,\u201d which gives <em>Space Brain<\/em> its title (\u201cLoaded like a freight train\/Flying like an aeroplane\/Feeling like a space brain\/One more time tonight,\u201d Williams drawls).<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1024px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  lrv-u-border-a-2\">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((683\/1024)*100%);\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-flex lrv-u-flex-direction-column lrv-u-align-items-center\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase lrv-a-font-body-xs lrv-u-margin-t-050 lrv-u-text-align-center\">Brandon Wood*<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI prefer more of the late Eighties bands with the blues-rock elements,\u201d Williams says. \u201cI made this record as a tribute to that music. I was like, \u2018These guys look like action figures.\u2019 I started doing deep dives into this stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe release of <em>Space Brain<\/em> underscores the long-running connection between Eighties hard rock and country music.
