Max McNown erupted onto the country music scene\u00a0just recently, and his momentum hasn’t slowed.<\/p>\n
It’s been quick.<\/p>\n
He really only doubled down on playing the guar in 2022, when he moved to southern California. Then, in 2023, he released “A Lot More Free,” and by the end of 2024 it would be viral on TikTok.<\/p>\n
Nothing has been the same since then.<\/p>\n
Listening to what his fans crave, on Friday (July 18), McNown released\u00a0a deluxe album, Night Diving (The Cost of Growing Up).<\/em><\/p>\n It’s a girthy\u00a021-song project that displays many facets of the human heart. He dives into the emotional matters of addiction, heartbreak, regret, self-growth and redemption.<\/p>\n “I see all those 21 songs as one project, although we released it as two parts,”\u00a0the singer tells Taste of Country in an Instagram Live.<\/p>\n His powerful marrying of country and folk can be heard on 11 of the never-before-released tracks.<\/p>\n “Since my first EP, I\u2019ve been on the hunt to find myself as a musician, and with this album, I\u2019ve officially made something that fully represents me, both sonically and in my songwriting,\u201d he says in a press release.<\/p>\n McNown enlisted the help of Cameron Whitcomb to join him\u00a0on the title track. “Night Diving” is about the cycles of addition, and Whitcomb\u2019s voice\u00a0blends effortlessly with McNown\u2019s.<\/p>\n While his music can be incredibly introspective and deep, he wants fans to know there is another side to him, as well.<\/p>\n “People listening to my music, you might think I\u2019m sadder than I really am,” he says, smiling.<\/p>\n “You\u2019d think I\u2019d be a heavier, tortured artist. If you see me live or you talk to me, I have a very happy disposition. The inspective part I get out in my writing \u2014 it\u2019s like a therapy session for me.”<\/p>\n Max McNown grew up in a family that\u00a0really appreciates music. While\u00a0none of his other family members pursued it professionally,\u00a0he shares that he has fond memories of his family singing together and his dad playing the guitar.<\/p>\n At 21, McNown left his hometown in Oregon for California and a change of scenery. His dad let him take his old guitar,\u00a0so he learned to play it.<\/p>\n The singer says he got his true<\/em> start street performing in California \u2014 that\u2019s where the itch to\u00a0entertain others grew.<\/p>\n He gained attention on\u00a0TV talent shows like American Idol<\/em>, and while he thought at first that would be a great avenue to get his music out there, he quickly decided he needed to cut his own path \u2014 a more unique path.<\/p>\n He moved to Nashville and hasn\u2019t looked back since.<\/p>\n With the deluxe album out, McNown is\u00a0preparing to head out on his Forever Aint Long Enough Tour. It kicks\u00a0off on August 21 in Kansas City.<\/p>\n When it comes to his tour rider, he keeps it pretty simple.<\/p>\n “I usually like dates,” he says, revealing that he prefers a healthier backstage snack. \u201cThey are good, healthy, but also sweet snacks. I put distilled water on there because I have a nebulizer and want it to be clean water in there.”<\/p>\n He acknowledges that his backstage wants are really needs \u2014 more functional than fun.<\/p>\n \u201cI like liquid IV, vitamin C packets … it’s so boring,” he says with a laugh. “People always think the road is partying and drugs, but I think overall that\u2019s changing for the better, in my opinion.”<\/p>\n Maybe someday he’ll get to include what he really wants on his tour rider: “I\u2019d love a portable cold plunge and steam room,” McNown admits.<\/p>\n<\/div>\nWho\u00a0Is Max McNown?<\/h3>\n
