{"id":41577,"date":"2025-07-22T12:33:44","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T12:33:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/22\/scott-gorham-reflects-on-john-sykes-impact-on-thin-lizzy\/"},"modified":"2025-07-22T12:33:44","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T12:33:44","slug":"scott-gorham-reflects-on-john-sykes-impact-on-thin-lizzy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/07\/22\/scott-gorham-reflects-on-john-sykes-impact-on-thin-lizzy\/","title":{"rendered":"Scott Gorham Reflects on John Sykes&#8217; Impact on Thin Lizzy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Scott Gorham recalled wanting John Sykes to fail his audition with <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/thin-lizzy\/\">Thin Lizzy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/john-sykes-thin-lizzy-whitesnake-dies\/\">late British guitarist<\/a>, who was around 22 years old when he joined the band in 1983 at <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/phil-lynott\/\">Phil Lynott<\/a>\u2019s suggestion, brought a heavier edge to the music, as heard on that year\u2019s album <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/thin-lizzy-thunder-and-lightning\/\"><em>Thunder and Lightning<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent interview, Gorham told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/artists\/guitarists\/scott-gorham-on-future-of-thin-lizzy-remembering-the-late-john-sykes\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Guitarist<\/em><\/a> that he hadn\u2019t wanted the entire episode to take place at all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/thin-lizzy-albums-ranked\/\">Ranking Every Thin Lizzy Album<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told Phil we had to stop this whole thing,\u201d he recalled. \u201cThe drug addictions. Phil losing his voice. The mistakes we were now making on stage: that really hurt because we were a band that just did not make mistakes; then you hear a recording and you go, \u2018What the hell was that?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I said, \u2018Let\u2019s wrap this thing up. Let\u2019s get our shit together and when we both get healthy, we\u2019ll hit everybody over the head with a fucking sledgehammer.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Lynott rejected the idea. \u201cPhil says, \u2018Let\u2019s do one more album and world tour. I know this kid. He\u2019s really good. He\u2019s with Tygers Of Pan Tang.\u2019 I\u2019d heard the name in magazines but never heard anything they\u2019d recorded. Phil says, \u2018I promise you, you\u2019re gonna like him; and if you don\u2019t, we\u2019ll look for somebody else.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Scott Gorham Names Thin Lizzy\u2019s Best Song With John Sykes<\/h3>\n<p>Gorham admitted that when Sykes tried out, \u201cI couldn\u2019t fault him in any way. I really wanted to say, \u2018See, there\u2019s nobody out there, so we gotta walk away from this.\u2019 But I couldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cWe were not a metal band, but John brought in that metal edge. He had a fiery style, and I stepped up my sound to match his. Really, his strength was the quickness.
