This week, he\u2019s giving his longtime pal the biggest co-sign available, releasing a new EP centered on Roberts\u2019 song \u201cClassic Love,\u201d a bittersweet, slow-rolling ballad<strong> <\/strong>that he\u2019s wanted to do something with for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWe always knew it was just extra special,\u201d Vile says. \u201cIt\u2019s so great. Listening to the early single <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3phGg6DGC1s\">\u201cUnspotted Clothes,\u201d<\/a> which would eventually become the centerpiece of Roberts\u2019 well-received 2011 debut, <em>Big Bells and Dime Songs<\/em>, Vile sensed a kinship right away. \u201cMy music is often written when I\u2019m down, but I also make sure eventually I turn it around with a joke or something like that. And he does things like that a lot,\u201d he says. \u201cHe can get you in the chest with a melancholy thing, but he can also make you laugh. It could be within one line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe reached out to Roberts online, and the two became friends. Not long after that, drummer Kyle Spence, who\u2019s one of Roberts\u2019 closest collaborators, joined Vile\u2019s backing band, the Violators. Vile was beginning to win a wider audience for his own music at the time; in 2015, when he reached a new career peak with his album <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/blieve-im-goin-down%e2%80%89-%e2%80%89-%e2%80%89-118969\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/blieve-im-goin-down%e2%80%89-%e2%80%89-%e2%80%89-118969\/\">B\u2019lieve I\u2019m Goin Down\u2026<\/a><\/em> and the adult alternative smash <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=659pppwniXA\">\u201cPretty Pimpin,\u201d<\/a> he invited Roberts out on the road as one of two opening acts, along with Waxahatchee.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tVile recalls that tour as a somewhat hectic one for himself. \u201cWe had our one and only Number One hit, and I was struggling with technology,\u201d he says. \u201cI had in-ear monitors for the first time. Our shows were kind of a clusterfuck at best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut he looks back fondly on Roberts\u2019 opening sets, where he\u2019d frequently come out for a cameo. \u201cI\u2019d walk onstage and sing along to \u2018Unspotted Clothes,&#8217;\u201d he says. \u201cIt was a wild ride and it was beautiful\u2026. I\u2019ve believed in him ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tVile first heard \u201cClassic Love\u201d as part of a still-unreleased album that Roberts was making with Spence some years back. \u201cI was like, \u2018Man, this could go on <em>our<\/em> record,\u2019\u201d he says. He ended up with the two distinct takes on the song that anchor the <em>Classic Love<\/em> EP. It opens with Roberts\u2019 original recording, completed in the studio with some added vocals from Vile. \u201cI just sang along with it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe second version of \u201cClassic Love\u201d on the EP is a \u201cfolky, trancey\u201d cover that Vile recorded this summer with the Violators, including some \u201creally good, jangly, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CZXLLMbJdZ4\">\u2018There She Goes\u2019<\/a>-esque guitar\u201d from longtime sideman Jesse Trbovich and jazzy drumming by Mikel Patrick Avery of Natural Information Society. \u201cThat\u2019s my cover of Luke\u2019s song with all my boys involved,\u201d Vile says. \u201cIt\u2019s just my nod to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe EP also features a second Vile\/Roberts collab on \u201cHit of the Highlife,\u201d featuring a cool, spacey arrangement full of wah-wah guitar and \u201call kinds of loops and synths.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s sort of a hypnotic thing about both of us being in our respective hometowns and traveling to get a shot of inspiration, only to go back home,\u201d Vile says. \u201cThat one turned out awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ recirculation-modules lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tRelated Content<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe rounded out the EP with a pair of remakes that are sure to delight KV fans. One of them, \u201cSlow Talkers \u201922,\u201d revisits a finger-picking highlight from his 2008 debut, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7JVM1aHrBU4\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7JVM1aHrBU4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Constant Hitmaker<\/a><\/em>. \u201cI just love that I have these folk songs in my repertoire that I can return to,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve been doing this for, I don\u2019t know, 20-something years, and now kids are coming to the shows that their parents played my music. I\u2019m moving forward, but sticking to my roots at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFinally, there\u2019s a cover of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/beach-house\/\" id=\"auto-tag_beach-house\" data-tag=\"beach-house\">Beach House<\/a>\u2019s 2015 song \u201cWildflower,\u201d which he recorded a couple of years ago after taking his two daughters, Awilda and Delphine, to see a Beach House show in Philadelphia. (At that same show, Vile sat in on his friend Mary Lattimore\u2019s opening set.) <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/depression-cherry-182698\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Depression Cherry<\/a><\/em>, the album on which \u201cWildflower\u201d originally appeared, is a favorite of his. \u201cI remember that album came out as I was doing promo for <em>B\u2019lieve I\u2019m Goin Down\u2026<\/em>, and I would just listen to it over and over in the airplane,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s such a good album. But I love them all\u2026. Their songs hit you right in the feelings. They make you want to cry, but they\u2019re so beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<em>Classic Love<\/em> is Vile\u2019s latest release for Verve Records, where he signed in 2021 after more than a decade on independent labels. He recorded his tracks at Spence\u2019s studio in Athens, Georgia, and at a studio operated in Philly by Violators bassist Adam Langellotti. \u201cI just love being able to do this on Verve,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd I like that we can crank them out ourselves. He mentions that he\u2019s been listening to a lot of hip-hop lately, and he\u2019s feeling inspired after reading a biography of the late underground legend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/mf-doom-dead-1109072\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MF DOOM<\/a>. \u201cI love MF DOOM so much,\u201d he says. \u201cHe talked about making multiple albums at once, which I would do back in the old days, using similar Roland digital eight-tracks that I used.
