Five teens from Franklin, Tennessee thrashing around a scrappy, makeshift stage on a flatbed truck with unabashed confidence and emotion-packed songs. At the center was a beacon, sporting a graphic t-shirt and auburn hair, with a voice that pierced through all the noise. This was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/paramore\/\" id=\"auto-tag_paramore\" data-tag=\"paramore\">Paramore<\/a>\u2019s first Warped Tour appearance, and that voice belonged to lead singer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/hayley-williams\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hayley-williams\" data-tag=\"hayley-williams\">Hayley Williams<\/a>, a fire-cracker of a performer amidst the festival\u2019s black-clad parade of dejected boys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn retrospect, it\u2019s crazy to think that Paramore, one of the biggest bands to come out of the pop-punk and emo scene, was once relegated to the female-only Warped Tour stage known as the Shiragirl stage, far from main stage acts like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/fall-out-boy\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/fall-out-boy\/\">Fall Out Boy <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/my-chemical-romance\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/my-chemical-romance\/\">My Chemical Romance<\/a>, who would soon be their peers in the pop-rock mainstream. \u201cAs a 16-year-old who had dreams of playing with the big boys, it felt like we were being slighted,\u201d Williams told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2020\/05\/in-conversation-hayley-williams.html\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Vulture<\/em><\/a> in 2020. For Paramore, that just meant they had to rock harder. \u201cI would spit farther, yell louder, and thrash my neck wilder than anyone,\u201d Williams added in the same interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAnd that she did. The way Williams commanded the tiny, pink-bannered stage was a turning point for the emo genre, and would prove to have a ripple effect beyond the confines of that scene. Here was this teen girl showing she could rock amongst the best of the scene with powerhouse vocals and great songs to match. It shouldn\u2019t have been a phenomenon, but at that time of peak misogyny, it was.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhile most people heard of Paramore because of their breakout 2007 LP <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/best-albums-21st-century-1235177256\/paramore-riot-1235185296\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/best-albums-21st-century-1235177256\/paramore-riot-1235185296\/\">Riot!<\/a><\/em>, it was<em> All We Know Is Falling <\/em>that served as their introduction to a generation of fans on that vital first Warped Tour run. This summer marks the 20th anniversary of Paramore\u2019s sharp debut, which laid the foundation for everything the band would become. Explosive, dark-tinged tracks like \u201cEmergency\u201d and \u201cPressure\u201d showed Paramore\u2019s penchant for bangers \u2014 and have since become notable additions to the emo canon. From the album\u2019s instrumentation to its lyrics, <em>All We Know Is Falling<\/em> displays Paramore\u2019s strengths as they bellowed about their shared dreams and experimented with screamo singing on songs like \u201cMy Heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThough Williams admitted to being careful to not use any defining pronouns in the lyrics for <em>All We Know Is Falling<\/em> and some of the band\u2019s subsequent records, she still didn\u2019t shy away from writing about her personal experiences as a young woman. \u201cConspiracy\u201d is the first Paramore song ever written and is about the controversy behind Williams\u2019 name being the only one on the band\u2019s record contract because she was the key interest of Atlantic Records. \u201cExplain to me this conspiracy against me and tell me how I\u2019ve lost my power,\u201d Williams wails.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Paramore: Emergency [OFFICIAL VIDEO]\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mgJ8BZi3vTA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWe wrote those songs over the course of probably a year,\u201d Williams told <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6254612\/paramore-interview-this-is-why-album\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Time<\/em><\/a> in 2023. In the same interview, drummer Zac Farro shared how the actual album was recorded and created within three weeks. \u201cThat it made us not second guess ourselves\u2026 That\u2019s something we still attribute to this day in helping us make quick decisions.\u201d Looking back 20 years after the fact, it\u2019s a feat that a pack of teenagers had such strong instincts from the jump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAt the time, Paramore was both accessible and preternatural; they were everyday teens that proved to young kids anyone could make a band, but with talent well beyond their years. The Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame has the lacy white dress from Paramore\u2019s theatrical \u201cEmergency\u201d music video <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Paramore\/comments\/1m59gvg\/emergency_music_video_dress_at_the_rock_and_roll\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">on display<\/a> as part of the Warped Tour exhibit. In the museum description, Williams is specifically heralded for inspiring future generations of bold musicians like Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo. This time, they served as co-headliners alongside My Chemical Romance, cementing their status as scene titans. During their set, Williams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HouUelmaHLI&amp;t=314s\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">delivered<\/a> a brutally honest emo history lesson before launching into a post-hardcore take on \u201cHere We Go Again\u201d from <em>All We Know Is Falling<\/em>. \u201cWhen Paramore came onto the scene in roughly 2005, the scene was not always a safe place to be if you were different,\u201d she said. \u201cI can think of nothing more anti-establishment than young women, people of color, and the queer community\u2026 If you are one of those people, there is space for you now.\u201d It\u2019s a message they\u2019ve been sharing since the early days.
