Mk.gee, real name Mike Gordon, is a man of few words \u2014 he doesn\u2019t do many interviews, and can usually be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-live-reviews\/mk-gee-brooklyn-concert-review-1235022864\/\">seen onstage<\/a> showing off his unique style of guitar-playing beneath a fog machine and strobe lights, his wavy brown locks covering his face. So when the 28-year-old does speak, listen up. It\u2019s about to get real.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThis is an amazing night,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a celebration.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHe was right. Mk.gee was about to begin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/rolling-stone-gather-no-moss-rock-tour-mj-lenderman-1235337934\/\">Rolling Stone Presents: Gather No Moss<\/a>, a multi-city rock &amp; roll tour. And nothing says rock &amp; roll like the historic Denver Fillmore \u2014 where the Who and the Grateful Dead once played \u2014 with a sold-out show by Mk.gee, the innovative guitarist whom Eric Clapton once <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stereogum.com\/2264993\/eric-clapton-raves-about-mk-gee-says-he-plays-guitar-like-nobody-else\/news\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">compared<\/a> to Prince.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAround six p.m., the line of fans that was wrapped around the block quickly filed into the 3,900-capacity theater. It\u2019s been almost a year since Mk.gee (pronounced \u201cmick-ghee\u201d) was last in Denver, when he was on tour for his breakthrough album,<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/mk-gee-two-star-and-the-dream-police-1234971328\/\">Two Star &amp; the Dream Police<\/a><\/em>. Plus, it\u2019s only his fourth show of 2025, so there was a feverish anticipation in the air. The Los Angeles DJ and producer won over plenty of Mk.gee fans on that tour, so he received a warm welcome (and some requests for his recent vibe-heavy single, \u201cT00STEP,\u201d which he eventually played). Ever since he blew up with <em>Two Star &amp; the Dream Police <\/em>\u2014 collaborating with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/justin-bieber-new-music-mk-gee-1235095084\/\">Justin Bieber<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/bon-iver-sable-fable-review-1235311685\/\">Bon Iver<\/a> and performing on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/snl-watch-mk-gee-perform-alesis-rockman-debut-1235159768\/\"><em>Saturday Night Live<\/em><\/a> \u2014 critics have been racking their brains trying to identify his sound. Is he experimental indie? A little bit soft rock? Maybe even a little Phil Collins, particularly on the devastating Nineties banger \u201cCan\u2019t Turn Back the Years\u201d? Tonight, looking out at the jam-packed venue, it\u2019s clear that it doesn\u2019t really matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMk.gee took the stage around nine p.m., backed by guitarist Andrew Aged and multi-instrumentalist Zack Sekoff. He\u2019s been known to revisit the sparkling \u201cDNM\u201d in his set \u2014 sometimes even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stereogum.com\/2283247\/mk-gee-played-dnm-12-times-in-minneapolis\/news\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">a dozen times<\/a> in one evening \u2014 and tonight was no different. He delivered it not once, not twice, but three times, teasing the crowd in between tracks. \u201cWe\u2019re never gonna do that again,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s <em>not gonna happen<\/em>. If he performs this one a dozen times in the future, we\u2019d be more than happy. For the final \u201cROCKMAN,\u201d Mk.gee brought SEES00000 and Black Noi$e back onstage, making it a full circle moment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tGather No Moss will stop in Chicago next, with the Beaches headlining the Salt Shed on Aug. 29. Wet Leg will lead the bill the following month in Nashville, on Sept. 23 at Marathon Music Works. On Oct. 16, MJ Lenderman will headline Brooklyn\u2019s Kings Theatre, the final stop of the rock &amp; roll tour. But it all began here at the Fillmore in Denver, with Mk.gee and his magnetizing music.
