She\u2019s in her childhood bedroom, complete with a rocketship-patterned bedspread and a copy of Lizzy McAlpine\u2019s <em>Older<\/em> on display. But she\u2019s not at home; the bedroom is a replica. Abrams is actually sitting dead-center at New York\u2019s Madison Square Garden during the first of two sold-out shows. \u201cThis is beyond every single dream I\u2019ve ever had, I can\u2019t even tell you,\u201d Abrams tells the crowd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt\u2019s the understatement of the year. The bedroom Abrams has replicated is the same one where, as an upstart singer-songwriter five years ago, she first performed her 2020 <em>Minor <\/em>EP during pandemic-era shows she livestreamed over Zoom. With each earnest lyric and lowkey performance since, Abrams gradually captured the hearts of Gen Z women around the world. By the time she released her 2023 debut album, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/gracie-abrams-the-secret-of-us-review-1235044135\/\"><em>Good Riddance<\/em><\/a>, the star had already nabbed opening act slots for Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIt feels like the most ridiculous master class known to man,\u201d Abrams told<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/gracie-abrams-the-secret-of-us-review-1235044135\/\"><em> Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> before opening for Swift\u2019s Eras Tour. \u201cI\u2019m going to learn so much keeping my head down and listening and watching her do what she was put here to do.\u201d And that she did. The Eras Tour saw Abrams transform from a breathy, understated vocalist into an acoustic guitar-wielding goddess wielding a slew of emotion-packed songs. Since then, the singer-songwriter released her breakout album <em><a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/gracie-abrams-the-secret-of-us-review-1235044135\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/gracie-abrams-the-secret-of-us-review-1235044135\/\">The Secret of Us<\/a><\/em> and its even-more successful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/gracie-abrams-announces-secret-of-us-deluxe-1235134286\/\">deluxe version<\/a>. Last year, Abrams embarked on her largest headlining tour yet, selling out three nights at New York\u2019s Radio City Music Hall. Now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/gracie-abrams-the-secret-of-us-deluxe-north-american-tour-1235197927\/\">for her current tour<\/a>, Abrams has leveled up to sold-out arenas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFrom the moment she took the stage on Monday night wearing a sparkling, lime green low-waist skirt and matching halter top, the singer couldn\u2019t hide her glee at playing MSG. But the main thing you have to know about a Gracie Abrams concert is there are no wardrobe changes, outsized production sets, or buttoned-up choreography.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tInstead, there are hundreds of bow-wearing fans willing to push the limits of their vocal chords as they scream each lyric like their life depends on it. I\u2019m not talking about just for the set list closers, either. There was full-blown yelling fo<strong>r<\/strong> Every. Single. Song.(At one point, girls in the row behind me complained about losing their voices before Abrams could even whip out her most popular tunes.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThis isn\u2019t just for the hell of it, either. From the third song into the show, \u201c21,\u201d it was clear these heart-torn melodies hold special connections for each fan. On \u201c21,\u201d fans squealed \u201csorry\u201d in unison as Abrams reached high into her register. But the singer\u2019s efforts were futile; the fans\u2019 screams were so loud, they drowned out her out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tNowhere was the deep-rooted fan connection with Abrams\u2019 brutally honest catalog more apparent than on \u201cLet It Happen,\u201d a Swiftian track with an explosive bridge. When it got to that point in the song, the singer urged the already-wailing fans: \u201cI want to hear this bridge, alright?\u201d They obeyed her like good pupils and didn\u2019t fumble a single lyric. Fans even knew every word to the unreleased synth pop track, \u201cOut of Nowhere\u201d which Abrams recently debuted at her Glastonbury set just last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn response to the roaring fans, the singer made sure to put them front and center. She walked through the crowd to two separate smaller stages on the floor, stopping to say \u201cHi\u201d to\u00a0everyone she could along the way. (It was the most excited I\u2019d ever seen a Garden crowd for an opener.) For his solo set, Pillsbury turned the charm offensive all the way up, shimmying his hips as he sang twangy love songs. The highlight, of course, was his celebrity guest for crowd-favorite \u201cSally, When the Wine Runs Out,\u201d which was none other than Natalie Portman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhile Abrams\u2019 viral TikTok hits like \u201cThat\u2019s So True\u201d and \u201cClose to You\u201d got their massive, end-of-the-night moments, they weren\u2019t even the biggest moments of the night. Sure it was a treat to hear several audience members try to conjure a surprise Taylor Swift appearance with their whispers. (The superstar is featured on fan-favorite track \u201cUs\u201d). Sure, the crowd jumped so hard, I swear the Garden shook as confetti rained down during the final song.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut it was the moment on the tiny C-stage, tucked at the very edge of the MSG floor, where Abrams commanded shined the brightest on Monday night. As the singer delivered lyrics about reflecting on her success, video clips of fans from her past shows played on the screen. \u201cI feel like myself right now,\u201d Abrams sang, and the line hit so hard, several fans had tears streaming down their faces. After all, these devoted attendees know better than anyone that the singer-songwriter has trekked through New York clubs for the past four years, growing her audience with each performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cSeptember 22, 2021 was the first show we ever played in New York and it was at Mercury Lounge,\u201d Abrams said. \u201cNow, because of you, we get to be here for two sold out nights. I just want you to know that all of us were backstage pinching ourselves and each other. You\u2019ve done this for us.
