Roughly once a week, Nick Cave<\/a> blogs about music, religion, grief, and the infernal state of world affairs through the medium of fan correspondence in his Red Hand Files<\/a> newsletter. His meatier responses become news stories, and few have traveled so far, or with such fervor, as his 2023 diatribes eviscerating ChatGPT. First, that January, he portrayed<\/a> a lyric \u201cin the style of Nick Cave\u201d as an omen of the apocalypse and \u201ca grotesque mockery of what it is to be human.\u201d A few months later, Cave elaborated<\/a> that any lyricists using artificial intelligence were \u201cparticipating in [the] erosion of the world\u2019s soul and the spirit of humanity itself.\u201d<\/p>\n But that was before his friend Andrew Dominik made a music video for Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds<\/a>\u2019 \u201cTupelo\u201d featuring a floating AI Elvis. Dominik\u2014a longtime Cave collaborator and the director of Blonde<\/em>, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford<\/em><\/a>, and One More Time With Feeling<\/em><\/a>\u2014had been at work on the video behind Cave\u2019s back. Presented with the result on the song\u2019s 40th anniversary, Cave decided<\/a> it was \u201ca soulful, moving, and entirely original retelling of \u2018Tupelo,\u2019 rich in mythos and a touching tribute to the great Elvis Presley.\u201d<\/p>\n Cave found that Dominik\u2019s AI-animated photographs of Presley \u201chad an uncanny quality, as if he had been raised from the dead, and the crucifixion-resurrection images at the end were both shocking and deeply affecting.\u201d He and his wife, Susie Cave, he added, \u201cwere blown away. As I watched Andrew\u2019s surreal little film, I felt my view of AI as an artistic device soften. To some extent, my mind was changed. \u2018It\u2019s a tool, like any other,\u2019 said Andrew.\u201d<\/p>\n Far from coming away from this religious experience with his tail between his legs, Cave emerged with a renewed understanding of his own brilliance. \u201cI believe that the ability to change one\u2019s mind is the very definition of strength,\u201d he wrote. \u201cWe pursue the truth wherever it may lead, remaining flexible and humble enough to adjust our views as new evidence emerges, regardless of how uncomfortable that may feel.
