Sound design studio Slate + Ash<\/a> has released a new virtual guitar based on sounds designed by avant-garde guitarists including Stephen O\u2019Malley<\/a>, Oren Ambarchi<\/a>, and David Torn<\/a>. Each guitarist contributed fragmentary sounds\u2014loops, textures, resonances, and mechanical failures\u2014that Slate + Ash used its playback engine to deconstruct and turn into a number of recursive preset sounds for the Kontakt 8 sampling platform. Watch a showcase for the software instrument, which is titled Ruins, below.<\/p>\n

Randall Dunn\u2019s Williamsburgh studio, Circular Ruin, co-created the instrument, and studio co-founders Ben Greenberg and Arjan Miranda\u2014as well as prepared guitarist Bill Horist\u2014contributed further source material. Slate + Ash and Circular Ruin describe the instrument as an \u201cinfinitely recursive sonic artefact\u201d inspired by the short story that gave the latter studio its name, Jorge Luis Borges\u2019 The Circular Ruins<\/em>.<\/p>\n
