{"id":42715,"date":"2025-08-02T14:25:49","date_gmt":"2025-08-02T14:25:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/08\/02\/paul-stanley-recalls-the-cruel-question-that-made-kiss-unmask\/"},"modified":"2025-08-02T14:25:49","modified_gmt":"2025-08-02T14:25:49","slug":"paul-stanley-recalls-the-cruel-question-that-made-kiss-unmask","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/08\/02\/paul-stanley-recalls-the-cruel-question-that-made-kiss-unmask\/","title":{"rendered":"Paul Stanley Recalls the Cruel Question That Made Kiss Unmask"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/paul-stanley\/\">Paul Stanley<\/a> said a cruel moment in a press interview triggered <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/kiss\/\">Kiss<\/a>\u2019 decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/kiss-first-show-without-makeup\/\">take off their masks<\/a> in 1983.<\/p>\n<p>The band, who were experiencing a slump in popularity as genres changed around them, responded by abandoning the characters and costumes they\u2019d been using for nearly a decade.<\/p>\n<p>They <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/kiss-grammys-1996\/\">changed back in 1996<\/a>, moving on from a period that Stanley admitted had seen them involved in some low-quality moments \u2013 but also saw some of their biggest hits including \u201cCrazy Crazy Nights\u201d and \u201cLick It Up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/doc-mcghee-kiss-makeup\/\">Doc McGhee Told Kiss: \u2018Call Me When You Put the Makeup Back On\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, the clothes got ridiculous,\u201d the guitarist told <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/billy-corgan\/\">Billy Corgan<\/a> in a recent episode of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/smashing-pumpkins\/\">Smashing Pumpkins<\/a> leader\u2019s <em>The Magnificent Ones<\/em> podcast (video below). \u201cWe looked like we got dressed in the dark in a costume store! \u2018What do you think my feather earrings?\u2019 \u2018Oh, good \u2013 goes with your eye makeup!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cBut it was a way for us to continue [and] I wanted the band to continue. \u2026 [N]obody can tell me when this band is over. And I did do interviews with journalists towards the end of the makeup period, where there could be such vitriol [because] somebody has joy in making you squirm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stanley theorized that such negativity came from \u201cpeople angered by how long we had succeeded. He went on to describe what he called the \u201cdeath knell\u201d moment in an interview.<\/p>\n<h3>The Interview Question That Angered Paul Stanley<\/h3>\n<p>The question, he said, was: \u201cHow does it feel to be on the <em>Titanic<\/em>?\u201d His reaction was: \u201cI\u2019m a human being.
