A madcap animated film following a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/k-pop\/\" id=\"auto-tag_k-pop\" data-tag=\"k-pop\">K-pop<\/a> girl group who moonlight as the mystical destroyers of an invisible demon realm \u2014 what\u2019s bolder than that?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut now, five weeks after <em>KPop Demon Hunters<\/em>\u2019 Netflix premiere, the film has skyrocketed to take the title of the streaming platform\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/kpop-demon-hunters-becomes-netflix-most-watched-animated-film-11781851\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">most-watched animated film<\/a> ever. As for the music, it\u2019s surpassed everyone\u2019s expectations, peaking at Number Two on the <em>Billboard<\/em> 200 albums chart and becoming the highest-debuting soundtrack of the year. And how are EJAE and Sonnenblick feeling about this surprise success? Absolutely golden.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s crazy! Unbelievable,\u201d EJAE tells <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> over Zoom from her home studio in New York.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cHas any songwriter been like, \u2018It\u2019s charting? What a disaster!\u2019\u201d Sonnenblick adds, laughing. \u201cWe loved the songs and believed in the music. It\u2019s just a testament to the hundreds of people who worked on this film. The film supports the music. The music supports the film. It\u2019s amazing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn the past decade-plus, K-Pop has grown into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/best-korean-pop-songs-1234727955\/\">a global phenomenon<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2024-07-30\/the-10-billion-k-pop-industry-is-facing-an-identity-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">multi-billion-dollar industry<\/a>, driven by incredibly devoted fanbases and the constant introduction of new groups to drive up interest. Against this backdrop, directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans introduce audiences to fictional singers Rumi, Zoey, and Mira \u2014 or, as their hordes of screaming fans know them, superstar girl group HUNTR\/X. What those fans don\u2019t know is that when HUNTR\/X\u00a0 hit the stage with their synchronized struts, sharp harmonies, and killer outfits, their music is really strengthening the Honmoon, a magical barrier that protects humans from the hungry, soul-sucking demons on the other side. But while fans continue to be obsessed with HUNTR\/X \u2014 the fictional group has even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/clyl1zyv1y2o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">outpaced Spotify records<\/a> set by real-life superstars BTS and Blackpink \u2014 Sonnenblick and EJAE tell <em>Rolling Stone <\/em>that writing their songs wasn\u2019t as easy as hitting the right notes. But I\u2019d never heard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/newjeans-new-music-minji-hanni-danielle-haerin-hyein-1234770863\/\">NewJeans<\/a>. That\u2019s what\u2019s exciting about entering into new collaborations with new genres. The music is so expansive and theatrical \u2014 the minute I heard it, it\u2019s like \u2018This is music to kill demons to.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEJAE, by contrast, has lots of experience with K-pop. Born in Seoul, she\u2019s spent her career immersed in that world, writing with groups like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/twice-new-album-with-you-th-ready-to-be-tour-1234970505\/\">TWICE<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/grimes-aespa-k-pop-media-ai-music-1234853710\/\">Aespa<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/le-sserafim-k-pop-coachella-fearnot-1234982727\/\">Le Sserafim<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/seulgi-red-velvet-solo-album-1234599341\/\">Red Velvet<\/a>. Much of her learning curve involved staying true to the genre\u2019s musical maximalism\u00a0while also keeping the storyline front of mind in a way she\u2019d rarely had to before.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWe both have partners, but Mark was like my <em>other<\/em> partner, my writing boyfriend,\u201d EJAE jokes. \u201cWe had the best collaboration, because Mark\u2019s from theater and I\u2019m from K-pop and pop writing, so we were both kind of each other\u2019s police. Like, \u2018No, no, EJAE\u00a0\u2014 back to the storyline,\u2019 and then I\u2019d go, \u2018No, no. Mark, I don\u2019t like that lyric. K-pop groups are typically built by labels and management groups, who sign potential stars to contracts and then take them through a rigorous vocal and dance training program to see if they can fit in any new groups. The idol hopefuls are called trainees, and for almost 10 years, EJAE was one of them, working with SM Entertainment, one of the biggest companies in the industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI got in when I was 11,\u201d she says. \u201cI feel like I experienced all facets of K-pop. I was a trainee, I became a songwriter, I also vocal directed for K-pop idols.\u00a0 So I really resonated with Rumi. She\u2019s such a perfectionist and trying to hide her shame, hide her flaws. And\u00a0 that\u2019s a huge part of when you\u2019re training.
