Speaking with <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> backstage at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-pictures\/lollapalooza-2025-photos-1235398341\/\">Lollapalooza<\/a>, the Chicago MC says the record is steeped in travel and personal change, incorporating different life lessons, experiences, and sounds he encountered over the past several years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cGoing to Ghana, reconnecting with a lot of my family, going through relationships changing, getting divorced \u2014 there\u2019s a lot of things that happened between my last project and this day,\u201d Chance says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLike all of Chance\u2019s albums, there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/hip-hop-family-tree-chance-the-rappers-chicago-194077\/\">plenty of his hometown of Chicago<\/a> on <em>Star Line<\/em>, but the time he spent in Ghana, Jamaica, and various domestic locales \u2014 New Orleans, Atlanta, Houston, Washington D.C., and New York City \u2014 were just as influential.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of other regions sounds,\u201d Chance says of <em>Star Line<\/em>, adding: \u201cI think the sounds, production-wise, if they\u2019re not super experimental, they\u2019re based in some of the Black music that was influential to me throughout my childhood or through my travels.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAmidst a whole lot of personal change, too, Chance says comedian Dave Chappelle gave him some solid advice for how to think about major artistic projects. Chance says the comedian compared stand-up specials and albums to \u201cyearbook photos,\u201d adding: \u201cIt\u2019s not the full story of who you are, it\u2019s who you are at that moment. And it\u2019s important to take that snapshot and put it out there so you have documentation of what that moment felt like. But really, it\u2019s about the inequities of the cannabis industry and using that as a metaphor, overall, for the inequities in agriculture.
