Accelerator<\/em>, frontman Christo Bowman describes it succinctly: \u201cBody and mind on separate vacations.\u201d Physically, they\u2019ve been soaking up the California sun, basking in the warmth of bright indie pop grooves. Though mentally, the Los Angeles band has been wandering for the past few years \u2014 not aimlessly, but in pursuit of a path forward. It\u2019s just been taking a while to find it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\tOn \u201cPatience,\u201d a deep cut from 2016\u2019s Disappear Here <\/em>they set out in the right direction. \u201cI\u2019ve been writing my thoughts down to clear my mind\/To try and figure out my brain\/To confront and set aside my pain,\u201d Bowman sang. \u201cI\u2019m approaching a breakthrough\/I\u2019m happy now\/Though, satisfaction comes and goes\/While the saddest facts, they cling like shadows.\u201d The hopeful confrontations continued, packaged in uncertain sonic swings on 2019\u2019s Mystic Truth <\/em>that were offset by guarded return-to-form resets on 2022\u2019s Apocalypse Whenever<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\tBut dressing the thoughts up differently didn\u2019t move the process along much. The breakthroughs never really stuck and they always seemed to get turned back around \u2014 either too proud to admit they\u2019d been going the wrong way until they were far off course, or too timorous in acknowledging what actually revealed itself when everything was laid out. The cracks showed, anyway. In 2022, guitarist Ray Libby exited the band after 10 years, leaving Bad Suns to recalibrate as a trio. On Accelerator, <\/em>they fill the gap between mind and body with their most compelling music in nearly a decade.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\tBad Suns hit the ground running on \u201cReady to Take Flight,\u201d a skittering hyperpop-influenced track that narrowly escapes a dead end. \u201cAfter the show, I wept an ocean\/In a hotel room, planning to die,\u201d Bowman sings. \u201cShut my eyes, fantasized\/Until my loved ones crossed my mind\/My whole plan unraveled right then in a moment.\u201d Later in the song, he finds out he\u2019s going to be a father. His new reality raises the stakes across the record, paired with clear-eyed revelations and reflections fueled by the frontman\u2019s newfound sobriety.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

\n\tBowman pours the past down the drain across Accelerator, <\/em>reminiscing on the subdued ballad \u201cPostcard,\u201d where he laments, \u201cMaybe you\u2019re right\/I was wrong\/To think you were the one\/You were the one good thing about me.\u201d Flashes of past relationships flicker through hazy synths of \u201cMystery Girl\u201d and \u201cWhat\u2019s Best for You Ain\u2019t Me,\u201d too. But the pulsating \u201cBack to Zero\u201d learns from every past mistake and makes them count. \u201cEvery night I plan my escape\/Nothing ever works out\/The way I thought it would,\u201d Bowman admits. \u201cSeek clarity in therapy\/Edit out what might sound insane\/I don\u2019t think that it works this way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

\n\tAccelerator <\/em>excels when Bad Suns settle into the discomfort of self-confrontation. \u201cWhy Am I Like This?\u201d confesses, \u201cWhen I see myself in photographs\/I wish I looked another way\/All of my favorite stories\/Are the ones in which I almost die,\u201d though a moment later, Bowman turns it around: \u201cLucky I\u2019m alive today.\u201d His real-time rewiring gives way to the earnest, if at times overwrought, \u201cWait in the Car,\u201d and the bouncing closer \u201cDo the Twist of Fate.\u201d As a three-piece, the band cushions their latest creations with percussive highlights. \u201cJust Like Magic,\u201d in particular, crescendos into an explosive bridge that channels the relentless tempo of Nineties house classics and emphasizes drummer Miles Morris\u2019 expansive range.<\/p>\n\n\tIt\u2019s been too long since Bad Suns sounded like they were having this much fun. Accelerator <\/em>makes up for lost time, but doesn\u2019t mourn the momentary misdirection. \u201cWhat goes up must come down\/I lost my balance in the clouds,\u201d Bowman sings on the buoyant opener \u201cSlow Karma,\u201d a roadmap for the years and albums to come. \u201cI\u2019ll turn my luck back around\/Oh, I\u2019m still searching for some higher ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
