Two years ago, the British-born singer-songwriter\u2019s Seventies ballad \u201cCrying Laughing Loving Lying\u201d was prominently heard on the soundtrack of <em>The Holdovers<\/em>, the Oscar-nominated Alexander Payne film that helped introduce Siffre\u2019s songs to a new generation. To catch up the general populace on what else he\u2019s done over the decades, a new Siffre compilation will be released next month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSpanning his sporadic 50-plus years of music-making, <em>The Best of Labi Siffre<\/em>, out Sept. 26, launches with \u201cBless the Telephone.\u201d First released in 1971, back when yapping on land-line phones was the preferred method of communication, the song was recently featured in HBO\u2019s <em>Hacks<\/em> \u2014 another instance of Siffre\u2019s music being discovered by way of a buzzy pop-culture moment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Labi Siffre - Bless the Telephone (Official HD Music Video)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XMMP-T3EF8s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tNow 80 and living in Spain, Siffre\u2019s presence has long hovered over pop music. Born Claudius Afolabi Siffre, the musician was the son of a Nigerian father and a mixed-race mother. Growing up as a gay Black man in England, he experienced racism from an early age. He initially considered pursuing a career as a jazz guitarist. Instead, a tape of his voice and songs helped land him a record deal during the heyday of the early Seventies\u2019 singer-songwriter era.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSiffre released a string of albums that blended folk, jazz, and mild funk into the Eighties, but none was ever made available in the U.S.; he performed only one show in this country. His mid-Eighties hit \u201c(Something Inside) So Strong\u201d was said to have been prompted by a documentary on apartheid, but the true inspiration behind the song \u2014 his sexuality \u2014 was another sign of how repressed he felt. \u201cIf we had said at the time that it was inspired by that [doc], but also by my life as a homosexual who had known he was gay from childhood,\u201d he told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/the-holdovers-song-crying-laughing-loving-lying-labi-siffre-1234939657\/\">in a rare interview<\/a>, \u201cwe would not have sold a single record.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBy his own admission, Siffre led a low-key life and career. As he told <em>RS<\/em>, he was \u201cnot a networker\u201d when it came to the music career. \u201cI always believed in the songs,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd because I\u2019m not very pushy, I kind of thought to myself, \u2018Well, one day, someone will notice.\u2019\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAmerican audiences heard that song when Kenny Rogers covered it, joining a list of those who\u2019ve interpreted Siffre\u2019s material, from Rod Stewart and Olivia Newton-John to Kelis, Greta Van Fleet, and Madness, whose 1981 ska makeover of \u201cIt Must Be Love\u201d put Siffre\u2019s name out there more than ever before. The latter, which used his breezy 1972 song \u201cCannock Chase,\u201d won the Grand Prix at this year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEuropean labels have released Siffre compilations before, but <em>The Best of Labi Siffre<\/em> marks the first to be prominently available in the U.S.,\u00a0and also the first with which Siffre was actively involved.
