{"id":43036,"date":"2025-08-05T21:42:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-05T21:42:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/08\/05\/salt-n-pepa-slam-umg-over-battle-for-master-recordings\/"},"modified":"2025-08-05T21:42:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T21:42:12","slug":"salt-n-pepa-slam-umg-over-battle-for-master-recordings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/08\/05\/salt-n-pepa-slam-umg-over-battle-for-master-recordings\/","title":{"rendered":"Salt-N-Pepa Slam UMG Over Battle For Master Recordings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hiphopdx.com\/artist\/salt-n-pepa\/\">Salt-N-Pepa<\/a> slam UMG as the pioneering rap duo sue the record label for control of their master recordings.<\/p>\n<p>The female MC\u2019s filed a lawsuit against the music giant back in May in which they allege UMG is violating federal copyright law by denying them the copyright to their music after a certain amount of time has elapsed.<\/p>\n<p>In a new interview with <em>Good Morning America<\/em>, the duo discussed the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>Salt said: \u201cWhen you\u2019re an artist, in the beginning, you sign a contract saying that the copyrights will revert back to you after 35 years. And we\u2019ve done all the things legally to get our copyrights back. But they\u2019re just refusing, so we had to sue them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"optanon-category-C0003\" style=\"aspect-ratio:16\/9; width:100%; height:auto; display:block;\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/gGugj_3Thxk\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cWe didn\u2019t have that leverage. We didn\u2019t have that knowledge. We didn\u2019t have that control in the 80s. And so, to be held to a contract from 1985, and 40 years later, it\u2019s, like, ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pepa also chimed in: \u201cThey wanna keep it. They wanna hold onto it. And they\u2019re tryin\u2019 to fight us. So, obviously, they understand what\u2019s the worth of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UMG have sought to dismiss the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>In better news, Salt-N-Pepa are set to receive the Musical Influence Award at the 2025 Rock &amp; Roll Hall of Fame, becoming the first Hip Hop act to be awarded the honor.<\/p>\n<p>Pepa said of the award: \u201cIt\u2019s an amazing feeling, because \u2026 it\u2019s for your music, not just one hit. It\u2019s about your journey, your legacy, what you have done, you know, the influence that you had \u2026 40 years and we\u2019re still here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Salt added: \u201cAuthenticity, especially in art, I think, leads to longevity. And I feel like that\u2019s a big part of why people took to Salt-N-Pepa, because we are authentic. And I wanna inspire women, inspire and encourage women to be themselves, to go for it, you know? And to not be afraid to knock down barriers in the workplace, in the world, whatever you\u2019re doing.
