In a sweet Instagram post, the guitarist thanked fans for accepting him as he honored the band\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cNight 3 in Golden Gate Park celebrating 60 years of @gratefuldead will be a one we\u2019ll never forget,\u201d he wrote, also thanking Graheme Lesh, son of Grateful Dead\u2019s late bassist Phil Lesh, for joining the group for all three nights. (Founding member Phil Lesh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/phil-lesh-grateful-dead-dead-1234809976\/\">died<\/a> in October 2024, his son performed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/sturgill-simpson-dead-and-company-morning-dew-gd-60-1235399330\/\">Morning Dew<\/a>\u201d with the band on Saturday.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cNo matter how many shows we play as a band, I will always be a guest in this musical world, and I\u2019ll never lose sight of what is the great honor of my life,\u201d Mayer said. \u201cHappy 60th, Grateful Dead, and long may you run, @bobweir, @mickeyhart, and @billkreutzmann.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMayer ended his post by acknowledging the legacy of Jerry Garcia. \u201cIt must be said\u2026 I\u2019ll never come close to playing like @jerrygarcia,\u201d he wrote. \u201cBut if I can somehow get you closer to him \u2013 and to the spirit he created 60 years ago \u2013 then I suppose I\u2019ve done my job. Thank you for accepting me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMayer also celebrated performing with Phish\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/trey-anastasio\/\">Trey Anastasio<\/a> during the shows. The Phish member joined Dead and Co. for performances of \u201cScarlet Begonias\u201d and \u201cFire on the Mountain\u201d during the Golden Gate Park show Sunday night. The\u00a0Trey Anastasio\u00a0Band also served as the warm-up act for the shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cBeyond the full-circle moment of it all, the lock we had going was instant,\u201d Mayer wrote. \u201cTrey\u2019s ear-to-fretboard data transfer time is unparalleled. Just before Phil Lesh died\u00a0last fall, Bobby Weir\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/bobby-weir-grateful-dead-company-interview-1235290296\/\">told\u00a0<em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>the band was considering reuniting for the anniversary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI think when Phil checked out, so did that notion, because we don\u2019t have a bass player who\u2019s been playing with us for 60 years now,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd that was the intriguing prospect. \u2026 I think you need somebody holding down the bottom. Phil had all kinds of ideas that were pretty much unique to him.
