Guitarist Iommi <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/black-sabbath-paranoid-success\/\">previously described<\/a> it as a \u201cfiller,\u201d noting\u00a0they had\u00a0\u201cnever done a three-minute song before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a new interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/black-sabbath-paranoid-led-zeppelin\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Classic Rock,<\/em><\/a> bassist Butler said, \u201cWe were short on material, and Tony just kind of came up with the riff on the spot. But <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/ozzy-osbourne\/\">Ozzy<\/a> and I thought it was too close to \u2018Communication Breakdown\u2019 by <a href=\"https:\/\/ultimateclassicrock.com\/tags\/led-zeppelin\/\">Led Zeppelin<\/a>. &#8230; We always loved Zeppelin in them days, sitting round on the floor smoking dope and listening to that first album. So when Tony came up with the riff to \u2018Paranoid,\u2019 me and Ozzy spotted it immediately and went, \u2018Nah, we can\u2019t do that!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, he\u00a0noted, \u201cThat\u2019s the thing about rock \u2019n\u2019 roll \u2013 everyone does that, especially when they\u2019re young and just starting out. It\u2019s putting your own stamp on it that counts. Its success led to some discomfort, though, especially when Sabbath\u00a0appeared on British TV\u2019s leading pop music show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe felt like traitors,\u201d he said. \u201cWe weren\u2019t trying to appeal to the kids who watched <em>Top of the Pops.\u00a0<\/em>\u2026 We felt so out of place. And at the gigs, we started getting a lot of screaming young kids.
