Influenced by his older brother Charlie Palmieri, Eddie, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-latin\/eddie-palmieri-pianist-salsa-experimentalist-dead-obituary-1235402558\/\">died<\/a> on Wednesday at age 88, would go on to become one of Latin music\u2019s most inventive and respected innovators. He wasn\u2019t just a prolific player; he was also a free-minded trailblazer with the skills to back up tons of imagination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThroughout his lengthy career, the musician would forge new paths in Latin music, experimenting freely with Latin jazz, salsa, and boogaloo, and adding in dashes of everything from psychedelic rock to folk music. He\u2019d go on to win eight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/e\/grammys\/\">Grammys<\/a>, including the first Best Latin Recording Grammy for 1974\u2019s <em>The Sun of Latin Music<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMany of his songs remain beloved standards that have influenced generations of salsa musicians and other artists. Two years later, Congolese rumba giant Franco and his O.K. Alone with the rhythm section, Eddie\u2019s piano glides forward like velvet \u2014  mathematically precise, radical and playful. \u201cAz\u00facar\u201d is more than Palmieri\u2019s finest moment. Sure, the opening cut of <em>Champagne<\/em>, \u201cAy Qu\u00e9 Rico\u201d checks all the boxes with breathy female choruses and swanky hand clapping. But there\u2019s a royal grace to the throaty lead vocals by Joe Cuba veteran Cheo Feliciano, and extra weight to the bass lines by Cuban master Cachao. The title track of another classic album, \u201cJusticia\u201d decries tyranny and discrimination, demanding social justice for Puerto Ricans and Black people. Recorded with teen vocalist Lalo Rodr\u00edguez, <em>The Sun of Latin Music<\/em> projects an aura of daring reinvention.
