Still, he found \u201cpeace\u201d knowing he was there to support Casandra \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/cassie\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cassie\" data-tag=\"cassie\">Cassie<\/a>\u201d Ventura, the R&amp;B singer who testified that Combs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/cassie-sean-combs-trial-testify-1235337861\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/cassie-sean-combs-trial-testify-1235337861\/\">routinely beat and harassed her<\/a> during their tumultuous decade-long dating relationship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAppearing on the <em>Call Her Daddy<\/em> podcast to promote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/product-recommendations\/lifestyle\/kid-cudi-memoir-audiobook-buy-online-1235404359\/\">his new memoir<\/a>, Cudi, whose real name is Scott Mescudi, revealed that he twice said no to prosecutors when they asked him to testify voluntarily. He then received a subpoena and had no choice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cAt first they asked, I said no. They asked again. I said no. Then I got subpoenaed. And I was like, \u2018Fuck, shit, no,\u2019\u201d Mescudi recalled. He considered wearing a suit but then decided he wasn\u2019t \u201cdressing up for this shit.\u201d He arrived at the federal courthouse in downtown Manhattan in jeans and a black leather jacket, smoking a cigarette. \u201cI hated every minute of it,\u201d he recalled. \u201cI did not want to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe Grammy winner said he managed to get through his May 22 testimony by thinking about Ventura, whom he dated in 2011 when she was taking a break from Combs amid what he testified were \u201csome problems\u201d in that relationship. \u201cI was calm,\u201d Mescudi told podcast host Alex Cooper. He recalled thinking to himself that he was there to corroborate Ventura after she gave four days of grueling testimony the week before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201dI just was there to support her. That\u2019s what kind of gave me peace with it when I sat down in that chair. It [went from], \u2018Damn, I don\u2019t want to do this,\u2019 to being like, \u2018Oh man, I gotta like hold homegirl down and, you know, look out for her,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cCassie is my friend, you know, and I love her, and I want to see her do well,\u201d he told Cooper. \u201cWhen I saw her get married, I was so happy for her that she found \u2026 her person. When I saw that she was having kids, I was like, awww, this is so awesome. In his closing argument, Combs\u2019 lead lawyer admitted Combs subjected Ventura to brutal domestic violence, but he said the abuse didn\u2019t amount to sex trafficking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMescudi was considered a key witness for prosecutors. They questioned him at length about the heart-pounding day in December 2011 when Combs discovered Ventura and Mescudi were dating. He said Combs was irate and personally broke into his home to confront him. Mescudi recalled racing to the home and connecting with Combs by phone during the ride over. \u201cMotherfucker, are you in my house?\u201d he recalled demanding. The two did not end up meeting face to face that day, but Mescudi testified that he returned to find that his Christmas presents were unwrapped and his dog was locked in a bathroom, clearly traumatized by something. He told jurors that his Porsche was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/kid-cudi-car-arson-fire-report-cassie-diddy-1235115198\/\">later firebombed\u00a0outside his Hollywood Hills home<\/a> in January 2012.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMescudi told jurors that when he went to meet Combs at the Soho House in Los Angeles because the situation was \u201cgetting out of hand,\u201d he found Combs \u201cstanding there, staring out the window with his hands behind his back, like a Marvel supervillain.\u201d Combs refused to acknowledge any connection to the car fire, Mescudi told the jury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn her own testimony, Ventura said Combs had told her he planned to bomb Mescudi\u2019s car. Mescudi told jurors he believed Combs \u201cwas lying\u201d when he denied any connection.
