{"id":44139,"date":"2025-08-18T16:54:36","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T16:54:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/08\/18\/goose-dawes-champion-mental-health-at-park-city-song-summit-2025\/"},"modified":"2025-08-18T16:54:36","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T16:54:36","slug":"goose-dawes-champion-mental-health-at-park-city-song-summit-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicianvoice.com\/index.php\/2025\/08\/18\/goose-dawes-champion-mental-health-at-park-city-song-summit-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Goose, Dawes Champion Mental Health at Park City Song Summit 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFresh off an appearance on <em>The Tonight Show<\/em> <em>with Jimmy Fallon<\/em> last week and the surprise drop of their fifth studio album, <em>Chain Yer Dragon<\/em>, jam-band juggernaut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/goose\/\" id=\"auto-tag_goose\" data-tag=\"goose\">Goose<\/a> headlined the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/park-city-song-summit-utah-festival-mental-health-1234826662\/\">Park City Song Summit<\/a> in Utah this past weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEstablished in 2019 as a conduit to create and cultivate dialogue about the state of mental\/physical health and wellness in the music industry, the PCSS has become a beacon of not only hope and compassion, but one of positive, tangible change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s a mindset, an energy, and a spirit that you can take away from here,\u201d says Ben Anderson, PCSS founder. \u201cThat\u2019s really hard to get in your average run-of-the-mill event. If somebody can leave here and apply that, and live even 10-percent happier? Then, that\u2019s a success for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIt really all boils down to communication,\u201d Goose lead singer Rick Mitarotonda tells <em>Rolling Stone <\/em>when asked about honing in on the health of a rock band. \u201cWhen things are getting weird, the vibe\u2019s off, and people are going through stuff, the ability to communicate with each other, understand each other, it means everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAlong with Goose, the fifth installment of PCSS included appearances by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/dawes\/\" id=\"auto-tag_dawes\" data-tag=\"dawes\">Dawes<\/a>, Greensky Bluegrass, Holly Bowling, Marcus King, Nicki Bluhm, Eric Krasno, Jennifer Hartswick, Duane Betts &amp; Palmetto Motel, Anders Osborne, Adam MacDougall, Cimafunk, and LP Giobbi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cAs I get older, I have to think about how to navigate the [music] industry in a healthy way, physically and mentally,\u201d says Krasno, the renowned guitarist who made his fourth trip to PCSS. \u201cIt\u2019s great to have a place and a festival that nurtures that side of things. For many years, there wasn\u2019t a lot of attention given to how to be a musician or to be in the business, but also maintain a healthy life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe weekend kicked off Thursday evening with a dinner at the Summit Supper Club hosted by celebrity chef Andrew Zimmern. Teaming up with Marcus King, Zimmern tailored the menu to dishes from King\u2019s native South Carolina (think oysters, barbecue, crab cakes). The men have become friends in recent years, bonding through a love of music.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWhat\u2019s really fun and challenging, for us as food people, is to pay homage to a human being, their music, and the piece of land that they\u2019re from,\u201d Zimmern says. \u201cAnd to translate that into food, and hope that you experience that at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tKing serenaded the guests, who, following the meal, walked in unison with the Trombone Shorty Foundation Alumni Band up Main Street to the Marquis, where King hit the stage alongside Krasno and Betts. Now, at least, they have the guidelines, they have the tools if they want them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBetts made a handful of appearances at PCSS, most notably Friday evening with his former bandmates Dawes. One of the most-anticipated of the weekend was the \u201cAmerican Rock n\u2019 Roll Band in 2025,\u201d featuring Krasno, Dawes\u2019 Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith, as well as Goose\u2019s Mitarotonda and Peter Anspach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI feel like all of my heroes, the people I look up to, built their own world and found their own path,\u201d Mitarotonda says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThe American rock band has a lane in 2025, but that lane has only gotten smaller,\u201d says Taylor Goldsmith, \u201cat least in this universe of guitar solos, lyrics, upright pianos, that sort of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t have any idea how to start a band today. I\u2019m grateful that we have what we have,\u201d Griffin Goldsmith says. \u201cI\u2019m grateful that our fans are already with us, because I\u2019m not sure that methodology of \u2018one show at a time, pound the pavement, one fan at a time\u2019 is even feasible unless you have a patron \u2014 it\u2019s just too expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFor the Goldsmith brothers, that perspective into their careers also permeates their personal lives. This past January, Griffin lost his home and Taylor had his studio destroyed in the apocalyptic Eaton Fire in the Altadena area of Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cFor a long time, we were like, \u2018How do we make the show bigger? How do we get the streams up?\u2019 or whatever the hell that means,\u201d Taylor says. \u201cBut, then you have kids, and you just want to be able to bring them to a festival and have them see their dad onstage, and be proud in some way. And as long as they\u2019re taken care of, that\u2019s really all that matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDawes tore through a set on the City Park Stage with Adam MacDougall on keyboards. For MacDougall, the underlying theme of the PCSS strikes close to his heart. A friend of late guitarist Neal Casal (both were longtime bandmates in Chris Robinson Brotherhood and Circles Around the Sun), MacDougall knows first-hand what it means to lose a loved one in the midst of a mental health crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cWith Neal, there wasn\u2019t a place to go, that understood the specifics of how that [musical] life can get you down,\u201d MacDougall says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/neal-casal-guitarist-obit-dead-877036\/\">Casal<\/a> took his own life in August 2019. Just two months earlier, jam-grass great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/jeff-austin-yonder-mountain-string-band-dead-obituary-852268\/\">Jeff Austin<\/a> also suffered the same fate.
