But then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/harry-shearer\/\" id=\"auto-tag_harry-shearer\" data-tag=\"harry-shearer\">Harry Shearer<\/a>, who plays Tap bassist Derek Smalls, fought a year-long battle to reclaim ownership of the film \u2014\u00a0and won. \u200a\u201dWe sat and we said, \u2018Well, what do we do?&#8217;\u201d Reiner says in the new episode of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/rolling-stone-music-now\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rolling-stone-music-now\" data-tag=\"rolling-stone-music-now\">Rolling Stone Music Now<\/a><\/em>. \u201cWe got the rights back. What do we do with this? And so at first we said, \u2018Eh. Forget it. We are not gonna do anything.\u2019 And then we started talking and then all of a sudden this kind of idea percolated and generated. So we said, \u2018Okay,\u00a0 let\u2019s go with it.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.megaphone.fm\/IMP9060925147\" frameborder=\"no\" height=\"200\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"100%\"><br \/>\n<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe resulting film, <em>Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues<\/em>, due Sept. 12, reunites Shearer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/michael-mckean\/\" id=\"auto-tag_michael-mckean\" data-tag=\"michael-mckean\">Michael McKean<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/christopher-guest\/\" id=\"auto-tag_christopher-guest\" data-tag=\"christopher-guest\">Christopher Guest<\/a>, with Reiner again serving as both the film\u2019s actual director and fictional documentarian Marty DiBergi. The McCartney scene recreates something that actually happened: \u201cPaul McCartney was in another room rehearsing and he happened to walk in one day when Spinal Tap was rehearsing and he says, play us a song, fellas.\u201d Elton\u2019s substantial role, which includes a performance of \u201cStonehenge,\u201d is \u201cthe punchline to a 41-year lead up,\u201d Reiner hints.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>For the first time, a woman \u2014 actress\/musician Valerie Franco \u2014 takes the notably perilous gig of drumming for Spinal Tap. <\/strong>\u201cWe weren\u2019t even thinking whether there was gonna be a female drummer or a male drummer,\u201d says Reiner. \u201cWe just had auditions for drummers and she came in and just kicked ass. I mean, she was unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reiner was deeply embedded in the 1960s Laurel Canyon rock scene, hanging out with Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and The Doors.<\/strong> \u201c\u200aWhen I started performing with the committee, which was an improv group that came from San Francisco and they had a troupe in L.A., there was a great crossover between the rock &amp; roll world and our world,\u201d he recalls. \u201cJanis Joplin used to come up on stage with us to improvise\u2026 Cass Elliot would come to the house. \u200aI was at a party once when, Joplin and [Jim] Morrison got into a fight and she took a Jim Beam bottle, smacked him over the head, and he passed out on the pool table.\u201d But he thinks his best rock n\u2019 roll story comes from the time Janis Joplin dated one of his friends: \u201cI overheard Joplin and Milan making love! That, to me, ranks right up there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<strong>The iconic \u201cgoes to 11\u201d scene worked because Christopher Guest didn\u2019t know Reiner was going to challenge his logic.<\/strong> \u201cThe funny thing about Chris is that he\u2019s so in the moment,\u201d says Reiner. \u201cIf you do it once and they say, \u2018Okay, let\u2019s do it again,\u2019 he won\u2019t do the same thing because he doesn\u2019t remember what he did the last time. I also find that when I put Chris in a corner, he\u2019s great.
