The hard-edged U.K. band \u2014 often described as post-punk, a label they tend to reject \u2014\u00a0provided the soundtrack to his new movie, the thriller<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-reviews\/caught-stealing-review-austin-butler-1235410398\/\"> <em>Caught Stealing<\/em><\/a>, starring Austin Butler and Zoe Kravitz.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIdles contributed five<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/idles-rabbit-run-darren-aronofsky-caught-stealing-1235397560\/\"> new songs<\/a> to the film, plus a cover of the Clash\u2019s version of Junior Murvin\u2019s \u201cPolice and Thieves,\u201d while also performing every note of composer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/rob-simonsen\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rob-simonsen\" data-tag=\"rob-simonsen\">Rob Simonsen<\/a>\u2018s score. \u201cI couldn\u2019t really find another example, except for Queen with Flash Gordon,\u201d Aronofsky tells <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cThe movie needed a house band.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"IDLES - Rabbit Run (Official Lyric Video)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RaMK4gDYl4o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThe idea was that the Idles would be the orchestra,\u201d says Simonsen, who previously collaborated with Aronofsky on 2022\u2019s <em>The Whale<\/em>. \u201cWhich then became about learning how they create, how they think, how they process. You\u2019re dealing with a very unique band that achieves their sound in a very unique way. So that was where we needed to start.\u201d\u00a0He jokingly suggests some friction along the way: \u201cThey were real dicks about it. But we worked through it, and then it was amazing. And it was really an organic process from that point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIdles learned Simonsen\u2019s demos by ear and went from there. \u201cIt really was about being in the studio with the scenes and obviously Rob\u2019s amazing composition,\u201d says Idles frontman Joe Talbot. \u201cAnd then just, I guess, adapting it and giving it depth with our tones and the 700 pedals that our guitarists have got.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBefore filming began, Talbot wrote five original songs, including the excellent, breakbeat-laced single \u201cRabbit Run,\u201d based solely on his reading of the movie\u2019s script. \u201cI read it on the plane home and immediately was just seeing the music,\u201d he recalls. \u201cA story creates an energy, right?\u2026 The nature of the film is a man running away, not just from big scary monsters, but also from himself. Simonsen dove into the era\u2019s sonic palette, revisiting Massive Attack, Morcheeba, and the Prodigy. \u201cYou never want to imitate,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s not the point, but you wanna pull out clothes from that closet and try \u2019em on and feel it out and get familiar with the textures. But it was never trying to go back to those exact sounds or those machines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIdles have their share of Nineties influences, but mostly from the decade\u2019s non-rock side. \u201cA massive part of my kind of musical DNA is from the Nineties,\u201d says Talbot, who was a teenager at the turn of the century.\u00a0 \u201cI didn\u2019t give a shit about white dudes with guitars in the Nineties. I was listening to the Pharcyde and hip-hop, which is a massive part of New York\u2019s DNA.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAronofsky also wanted the score to include the ambient sounds of a rock band. \u201cOne of the things that Darren had a pretty inspired vision on was the sound of amps being plugged in and whatnot, and feedback from the guitar,\u201d Simonsen says.\u00a0\u201cThere\u2019s like drums fumbling around and like feedback happening, trying to catch those sounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ recirculation-modules trending-in-article lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIdles are nearly done with their next album, the follow-up to 2024\u2019s <em>Tangk<\/em>, and Talbot says the soundtrack experience has \u201cgiven me a real lease of life. I\u2019m excited to go and finish the album now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<em>Caught Stealing<\/em> is dark and violent, but also one of the most crowd-pleasing movies of Aronofsky\u2019s career. And while he\u2019s in a populist mode, he admits to some interest in exploring one of our era\u2019s most commercial genres. \u201c\u2018I love music biopics,\u2019 he says. \u2018I\u2019m a big fan. I love, like, the struggling artists, and then suddenly it works. The Johnny Cash moment at Sun Records with Joaquin was awesome.
