Eduardo Braniff was literally right there. A mid-level MTV executive at the time, Braniff was the designated talent escort for Love and her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/hole\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hole\" data-tag=\"hole\">Hole<\/a> bandmates for the 11th annual VMAs, held at New York\u2019s Radio City Music Hall 30 years ago, on Sept. 7, 1995.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBraniff says he was \u201crandomly\u201d assigned to escort the band during rehearsals and night-of-show. And while colleagues knew he was deft at handling \u201cshall-we-say \u2018dynamic\u2019 talent,\u201d none could predict that Love would make pop culture history that night: After pelting Madonna and Loder with compacts from her purse, she inserted herself into their chat, which was being held on a platform outside the venue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe clash between two very different icons \u2014 Madonna begged Loder not to invite her up, quipping \u201cCourtney Love is in dire need of attention right now\u201d \u2014 went viral a decade before YouTube or Twitter launched, and served as a chill precursor to Kanye West and Taylor Swift\u2019s 2009 debacle. Broadcast during MTV\u2019s hegemonic peak, that night\u2019s actual ceremony featured some equally wild, if forgotten, juxtapositions of stars. The Notorious B.I.G. and Bill Bellamy (remember him?) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@mjmediafanaccount\/video\/7469342167048277254\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">presented<\/a> Michael and Janet Jackson with a Moonman for Best Dance Video for \u201cScream\u201d; Janet wore a \u201cPervert\u201d T-shirt, widely interpreted as mocking pedophilia accusations against her brother. But nothing could compare to this post-show moment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe two women were at distinct professional and personal phases at the time. Madonna was enjoying her second consecutive decade of global superstardom, celebrating her fourth Moonman win (for \u201cTake a Bow\u201d), a comeback from the harsh backlash toward her <em>Erotica <\/em>LP and <em>Sex <\/em>book era, and preparing to shoot her dream film role, <em>Evita. <\/em>(Motherhood and her acclaimed album <em>Ray of Light <\/em>were still a few years away.)\u00a0She was also a VMAs MVP from the jump, with a slew of definitive show moments behind her, including the seismic debut of \u201cLike a Virgin\u201d at the very first broadcast in 1984; a performance of \u201cVogue\u201d in Marie Antoinette drag in 1990; and a post-feud appearance with David Letterman in 1994. <\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFellow scene-stealer Love, by contrast, was still ascendant and much rougher around the edges. A year later, the grunge goddess would get a proper glam Hollywood makeover while touting her part in <em>The People Versus Larry Flynt. <\/em>But back in \u201995, only about a year and a half had passed since the traumatic, era-defining suicide of her husband, Kurt Cobain<em>. <\/em>That night, before performing <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3YO1x2GCPxg\">\u201cViolet\u201d<\/a> with Hole, she dedicated it to Cobain, River Phoenix, Hole\u2019s late bassist Kristen Pfaff, and other friends they\u2019d lost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cTo me, she was nothing but super cordial,\u201d Braniff recalls of Love that night. <em>\u201c<\/em>[But] she was a little loaded for bear with MTV, thinking that they had not done enough to promote the album\u2026 She was frustrated.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDuring the \u201cchaotic\u201d post-show walk to their cars, Braniff says Love\u2019s entourage included not just her bandmates Eric Erlandson, Patty Schemel, and Melissa Auf der Maur but also pal Drew Barrymore, Love\u2019s toddler Frances Bean Cobain, and a nanny. \u201cIt was a little bit like herding cats,\u201d he says now. \u201cOne of my cats darted away! I don\u2019t know exactly how she clocked that Madonna was out there, but she did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBraniff quickly realized what Love, eyeing the Queen of Pop, was about to do. \u201cShe is making her way over to Kurt and Madonna, wanting to be extraordinary Courtney,\u201d Braniff remembers. \u201cShe has something to share, she\u2019s got a show to give. Over an excruciating four minutes, with a sedate Loder declining to moderate much, the two previously acquainted women spoke about their shoes, comedian Dennis Miller, and Madonna\u2019s Maverick label breakout Alanis Morissette. A rambling Love likened fame to working in a hospital: \u201cI like it here. Good money!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cAnd a lot of available drugs!\u201d Madonna snarled back. Before the Material Girl\u2019s publicist, Liz Rosenberg, finally whisked her away, air kisses were exchanged. (A solo Love later hugged it out with Loder\u2019s MTV News partner Tabitha Soren.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI mean, you have Madonna in full Tom Ford couture, and you\u2019ve got Courtney in that messed-up baby doll look,\u201d Braniff says. \u201cIt was almost cartoonish. How could we draw these two more distinctly? If you were gonna have to write it up later, it would have been terrible\u2026 If somebody falls off the top of a building, it\u2019s wonderful television.\u201d (Madonna has never addressed the incident.
