Springsteen had just performed \u201cThunder Road\u201d with seven musicians, six of them representing a just-for-this-occasion combination of original and current E Street Band members\u2014Steven Van Zandt, Garry Tallent, David Sancious and Roy Bittan on keys, Ernest Carter and Max Weinberg on dual drums\u2014 plus longtime saxophonist Ed Manion. It was the first time this precise combination of musicians had ever performed onstage together, a union of the pre-1975, jazz-leaning E Street Band featuring Carter and Sancious and the version of the band\u2014with Bittan and Weinberg\u2014that\u2019s existed ever since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFollowing \u201cThunder Road\u201d was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/born-to-run\/\" id=\"auto-tag_born-to-run\" data-tag=\"born-to-run\">Born to Run<\/a>,\u201d the second of an all-too-brief two-song set concluding the day-long symposium celebrating the 50th anniversary of <em>Born to Run<\/em> at Monmouth University, hosted by the Bruce Springsteen Archives &amp; Center for American Music. During \u201cBorn to Run\u201d (with Carter nailing the complex drum fill Weinberg has said he\u2019s always had trouble playing), Springsteen and the E Street Band transformed the 700-capacity college auditorium into a stadium, with fans crowding the aisles and shouting \u201ctramps like us.\u201d when prompted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt was a thrilling finale to a day of on-stage panels, interviews and roundtable discussions featuring Springsteen himself, alongside many of the musicians and behind-the-scenes figures who played a role in the creation of <em>Born to Run<\/em>. Speakers ranged from E Street Band members to the album\u2019s engineer Jimmy Iovine to Springsteen\u2019s former and current managers, Mike Appel and Jon Landau, to Eric Meola, who shot the album\u2019s iconic cover, to assorted Columbia Records employees involved in the promotion of the record.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEven if Springsteen himself, who spoke during three separate panels before performing, was the day\u2019s unannounced-but-widely expected main attraction, the symoposium was a tribute to the many musicians, collaborators and industry players who helped make <em>Born to Run<\/em> the album we know today.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThese were the guys that were there when you need them,\u201d Springsteen said about his bandmates, Appel, Landau and Iovine during a panel about the recording of the album, \u201cwhen you have nothing, and were no one, these were the guys that gave [me] everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1024px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  lrv-u-border-a-2\">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((682\/1024)*100%);\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-flex lrv-u-flex-direction-column lrv-u-align-items-center\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase lrv-a-font-body-xs lrv-u-margin-t-050 lrv-u-text-align-center\">Rob DeMartin*<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe <em>Born to Run<\/em> symposium comes during a heightened period of legacy-building for Springsteen in advance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/bruce-springsteen-biopic-jeremy-allen-white-1235367758\/\">next month\u2019s Bruce biopic<\/a>, <em>Deliver Me From Nowhere<\/em>. And while that film (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/bruce-springsteen-electric-nebraska-box-set-1235421364\/\">and the most recently announced box-set<\/a>) focuses on <em>Nebraska<\/em>, it\u2019s been a backwards-looking year for Springsteen in more ways than one. Apart from this year\u2019s <em>Tracks II<\/em> box set, there\u2019s been plenty of commemorating the 50th anniversary of Springsteen\u2019s most iconic album: Many nuggets from the day\u2019s panels can also be found in <em>Tonight in Jungleland<\/em>, the recently published book on the making of the album by Peter Ames Carlin, who interviewed Springsteen and Landau on-stage earlier in the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut regardless of how many tidbits from throughout the day were first reported by Carlin, hearing those involved with the album discuss its backstory and mythology in-person made for an incredibly entertaining day for fans: There was former manager Mike Appel talking about hardballing both <em>Time<\/em> and <em>Newsweek<\/em> editors as he finagled for both covers with \u201cno interview without the cover\u201d policy (one he allegedly even extended to <em>Playboy<\/em> when they called asking for a Bruce interview). <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThere was Jimmy Iovine sharing what Springsteen told him after they listened to <em>Born to Run<\/em> in its entirety on a rainy drive through New Jersey just a few weeks ago: \u201cYou peaked!\u201d There was photographer Eric Meola talking about how tired Clarence Clemons and Springsteen were during the <em>Born to Run<\/em> photoshoot (\u201cThey\u2019re yawning in half the shots, exhausted. Yet in the other half, they\u2019re exuberant.\u201d) And there were stories from former Columbia employees Paul Rappaport, Michael Pillot and Peter Philbin about fighting the uphill battle of advocating for an artist they believed in when he wasn\u2019t gaining traction in his earliest years.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ recirculation-modules lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tRelated Content<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSpringsteen himself showed up early in the day, first spotted next to Jimmy Iovine in the wings towards the back of the auditorium, arms-crossed, as he cracked up while watching a humorous panel about the 1975 <em>Born to Run<\/em> tour in which tour photographer Barbara Pyle told a story about documenting Springsteen smiling for the first time in a year: \u201cThis guy was a shut-in!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSpringsteen then appeared in three consecutive panels. He responded to being asked how \u201cBorn to Run\u201d sounds to him 50 years later: \u201cIt sounds like I fucking sound!\u201d He told stories about his mother forcing him, at age 13, to pretend he was 12 to avoid paying adult prices for admission to a movie theater. He reflected on having a Peter Pan poster hanging in his bedroom circa 1974, the one that inspired him naming the character in \u201cBorn to Run\u201d \u201cWendy\u201d: \u201cNot sure what that [says about] my adult life; It actually explains quite a bit of it!\u201d He admitted he stole the opening of \u201cBorn to Run\u201d from \u201cThe Locomotion.\u201d He reflected on his controlling tendencies in the studio during <em>Born to Run<\/em> and talked about how intimidated he was by seasoned session pros like the Brecker Brothers and David Sanborn: \u201cI was young and insecure about anything and everything.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAnd he made jokes at his own expense. At one point, during a discussion of \u201cBackstreets,\u201d (a song \u201cabout those summer nights when you\u2019re left on your own,\u201d he called it) Springsteen asked for the song\u2019s lyrics to be pulled up on a teleprompter.
