The rapper and singer returned to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/mtv-video-music-awards\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mtv-video-music-awards\" data-tag=\"mtv-video-music-awards\">MTV Video Music Awards<\/a> for the first live performance of her new single <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/doja-cat-jealous-type-single-1235413785\/\">\u201cJealous Type,\u201d<\/a> an Eighties-inspired record that will appear on her upcoming studio album <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/doja-cats-vie-release-date-teaser-jealous-type-1235408337\/\">Vie<\/a><\/em>, out Sept. 26.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHer performance intentionally cut off VMA host LL Cool J with a broadcast of the star teasing her show and her special guest, Kenny G. When she broke out onto the stage, the set looked like something straight out of the decade that\u2019s been inspiring her, with a multilevel checkerboard floor, kooky shapes, and bright colors. Looking like a child of Janet Jackson\u2019s, her choreography was on point, complete with a rap break and moves complementing an electric guitarist and keytar player that got down behind her. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/vmas\/\" id=\"auto-tag_vmas\" data-tag=\"vmas\">VMAs<\/a>, let me hear you say \u2018Oh, I\u2019m jealous!&#8217;\u201d she beckoned to the crowd as magenta confetti dropped in from the ceiling and got the party started.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDoja last appeared at the MTV VMAs in 2023, when she brought her <em>Scarlet <\/em>alter egos to the stage with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/doja-cat-performance-2023-mtv-vma-awards-1234819731\/\">medley<\/a> of \u201cAttention,\u201d \u201cPaint the Town Red,\u201d and \u201cDemons.\u201d She\u2019s also returning as a nominee. \u201cJealous Type\u201d scored a nomination for Song of the Summer, while Doja is also up for Best K-Pop for her appearance alongside Lisa and Raye on \u201cBorn Again.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe three artists performed separately during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/doja-cat-oscars-james-bond-tribute-performance-1235286934\/\">a James Bond tribute<\/a> at the 2025 Academy Awards. \u201cI never get to sing like that and what I did was brave and scary as fuck for me,\u201d Doja wrote on Instagram at the time. \u201cI know a lot of people didn\u2019t like it but a lot of people did and I feel good that I
