Certain parts of the song were always easy to distinguish \u2014 \u201cLeonard Bernstein!\u201d \u2014 but the sheer volume of Stipe\u2019s volubility has led to plenty of lyrical misreadings over the years, exacerbated by R.E.M.\u2019s decision not to print song lyrics in their album liner notes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut last week, Stipe started to clear up some of the most mysterious lines from \u201cIt\u2019s the End of the World\u201d on BlueSky. (The exercise was inspired by, of all things, a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/michaelstipe.bsky.social\/post\/3lxn34j37kc22\"><em>Simpsons <\/em>meme<\/a>, and not even the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/qxiUpyQ8QA8?si=tKiV7AL5b2D8Rr60\">actual scene with an R.E.M. guest appearance<\/a> and Homer belting out obviously-wrong lines like, \u201cLeonard, what\u2019s-his-name, Herman Munster, motorcade, birthday party, Cheetos.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe first two he clarified were, \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/michaelstipe.bsky.social\/post\/3lxqcsqbn7c2e\">Left of west<\/a> and coming in a hurry with the Furies breathing down your neck\u201d; and \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/michaelstipe.bsky.social\/post\/3lxs7anvgas26\">Team by team<\/a> reporters, baffled, trumped, tethered, cropped, look at that low playing, fine, then.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"R.E.M. - It&#039;s The End Of The World\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z0GFRcFm-aY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tTo give a sense of just how easy it is to encounter incorrect lyrics, the \u201cIt\u2019s the End of the World\u201d page on <a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/Rem-its-the-end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it-and-i-feel-fine-lyrics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Genius<\/a> has those two lines listed as: \u201cLeft her and wasn\u2019t coming in a hurry with the Furies\/Breathing down your neck\u201d and \u201cTeam by team, reporters baffled, trump, tethered, crop\/Look at that low plane, fine, then.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAlthough further proving just how confounding the lyrics are, Stipe\u2019s R.E.M. bandmate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/mike-mills\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mike-mills\" data-tag=\"mike-mills\">Mike Mills<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/michaelstipe.bsky.social\/post\/3ly5conylb22l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">chimed in<\/a> to say he thought the line <em>was<\/em> actually \u201cthat low plane, fine, then,\u201d telling Stipe, \u201cI remember you said it was from a roadside sign about watch out for low planes flying.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tStipe replied, \u201cI\u2019m doing my best.
