\n\tJade<\/a> Thirlwall didn\u2019t just make her solo debut at the BRIT Awards earlier this year: The former member of the X Factor<\/em>-formed girlband Little Mix<\/a> made a statement. Showcasing \u201cAngel of My Dreams\u201d \u2014 her fever-dream launch single that interpolated Sandie Shaw\u2019s Eurovision winner \u201cPuppet On A String\u201d and took aim at her first go-round in the music biz \u2014 Thirlwall, under the mononym Jade, put on a four-minute, five-act spectacular that established her as a next-generation pop maximalist.<\/p>\n

\n\tThat\u2019s Showbiz Baby!<\/em>, Jade\u2019s first album on her own, isn\u2019t as wall-to-wall delirious as its inaugural single \u2014 but it is a fun, frothy pop album where the onetime Simon Cowell mentee thrills in the dancefloor\u2019s unpredictable abandon and her own power. She balances her vocal range, which can shape-shift from a full-throated belt into a cloud-borne coo; on the sumptuous insecurity chronicle \u201cPlastic Box\u201d she shows how she can easily swing from one to the other, and on the hiccupping kiss-off \u201cGlitch\u201d her upper register melds with the trap snares and keyboards surrounding it to form a glittery matrix.<\/p>\n

\n\tSince Little Mix came together under Cowell\u2019s watch in 2011, the notion of pop-as-genre has been repeatedly shattered and reassembled. While certain entities have tried to will circumstances back to the old way of doing things by hewing to the expected, Jade, on That\u2019s Showbiz Baby, <\/em>revels in that chaos \u2014 even the album\u2019s name seems to throw up its hands at the idea of a world ruled by anything resembling coherence. On the fiery assertion of purpose \u201cIt Girl\u201d she see-saws between delivering balcony-delivered arias and surrendering herself to clipped electro-house beats, while the thunderous bad-romance lament \u201cNatural At Disaster\u201d surrounds a mirrorball-lit slow-dance with imposing walls of synth that add to its lyrics\u2019 withering dramatics. Throughout the album, Jade is a winking eye at the center of a giddy, hooky pop storm, projecting a cheeky exuberance no matter what gets thrown her way. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n
