\n\tFive members of Pussy Riot<\/a> were sentenced in absentia on charges related to anti-war performances critical of Russia\u2019s military actions, a representative for the group confirmed to Rolling Stone<\/em> on Monday.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs Mediazona<\/a><\/em> \u2014 an outlet co-founded by Pussy Riot members \u2014 reports and their rep confirms, the members sentenced included Maria Alyokhina, Diana Burkot, Taso Pletner, Olga Borisova, and Alina Petrova, with the terms ranging from eight-to-13 years. Moscow\u2019s Basmanny District Court delivered the verdict, with the charges stemming from a December 2022 music video titled \u201cMama, Don\u2019t Watch TV,\u201d which authorities alleged spread \u201cfalse information\u201d about the Russian military, and an April 2024 performance in Munich, Germany, during which a member of Pussy Riot urinated on a portrait of Vladimir Putin, per Mediazona<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThrough the band\u2019s legal representatives, the five Pussy Riot members rejected the charges, claiming the trial and sentences are politically motivated.<\/p>\n

\n\tBurkot said in a statement to Rolling Stone<\/em> that as the author of the music in \u201cMama, Don\u2019t Watch TV,\u201d she stands \u201cby every single word, and my anti-war stance is clear.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe full-scale war against Ukraine has been going on for more than three years. And I continue to believe: Ukraine must win, and Putin must face trial in The Hague,\u201d Burkot continued. \u201cThe Russian government is a textbook example of patriarchy \u2014 the worst kind of abuser: a tyrant, a narcissist, a gaslighter, a toxic manipulator who lives off the destruction of others\u2019 will.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBurkot urged \u201cevery person in this world to use their voice,\u201d adding, \u201cActivism now is needed like daily practice, because only together can we resist and overcome the crisis of democracy.\u201d Burkot said that fortunately, the Russian government has \u201cno access to my physical body,\u201d but that \u201ceven if I were in Russia, I would say the same thing: go fuck yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n
