The absence is a surprising shift given the genre\u2019s rapid rise in recent years, and seems to stem partially from increasing challenges in booking Mexican artists under the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tJust last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/junior-h\/\" id=\"auto-tag_junior-h\" data-tag=\"junior-h\">Junior H<\/a> and Iv\u00e1n Cornejo carried the torch in the desert. In 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/peso-pluma\/\" id=\"auto-tag_peso-pluma\" data-tag=\"peso-pluma\">Peso Pluma<\/a> and Car\u00edn Le\u00f3n delivered some of the festival\u2019s most talked-about sets. The year prior, Becky G and DannyLux took the stage, while 2022 featured Banda MS, Natanael Cano, and Grupo Firme. Back in 2019, even 2026 headliner Justin Bieber was spotted dancing along to Los Tucanes de Tijuana, a year after Los \u00c1ngeles Azules made history with their Coachella debut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSeveral sources confirm to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> that at least two high-profile m\u00fasica mexicana artists were \u201cin talks\u201d to perform at the festival, with one major artist having trouble being booked over visa issues.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAs the genre has continued to grow, this year\u2019s Mexican music absence comes as the industry grapples with the challenge of booking acts months in advance amid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-latin\/visa-issues-latin-music-festivals-scrambling-michelada-fest-1235337556\/\">ongoing uncertainty<\/a> around artist visas, especially with artists who sing narcocorridos, or ballads that celebrate or discuss drug dealers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMany of Mexico\u2019s most-streamed performers have been sidelined by the issue, and would have been unable to be booked at all. Luis R Conriquez \u2014 who recently<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-latin\/luis-r-conriquez-breaks-out-corridos-album-meneo-1235418545\/\"> told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> about his pivot from corridos to reggaeton \u2014 remains unable to leave Mexico because of visa delays. Juli\u00f3n \u00c1lvarez, who sold out SoFi Stadium three times last year, was forced to cancel a Texas stadium show over similar visa complications earlier this year. And both Grupo Firme and Cano, both natural fits for desert returns, have also faced visa lags and cancellations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDuring his 2024 Coachella set, Peso Pluma used the stage to speak out against censorship, underscoring the importance of corrido culture in Mexico. And there\u2019s fear of revocations among artists who perform narcocorridos for what the State Department has described as \u201cglorifying\u201d criminals and terrorists with their performances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEarlier this year, Chicago\u2019s Michelada Fest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-latin\/michelada-fest-cancels-2025-artist-visas-uncertainty-1235333058\/\">canceled its 2025<\/a> edition after at least three of its artists faced visa delays and issues. \u201cWe\u2019re no longer able to guarantee the full experience we had dreamed up for you with all your favorite artists,\u201d the event said at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tRamiro Boj\u00f3rquez, organizer of BelicoFest, set to go on in November, told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> he is being \u201cvery, very cautious\u201d when selecting performers, focusing only on artists guaranteed to take the stage. \u201cWe can\u2019t let government restrictions stop us,\u201d he said. \u201cWe gotta work with what we have and give the audiences what they want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tStill, there are plenty of acts without immigration hurdles who might have been able to represent m\u00fasica mexicana at this year\u2019s festival. Fuerza R\u00e9gida, whose Mexican American members made history with their <em>111xpantia<\/em> album, would have been a strong choice. Rising stars like Xavi, Clave Especial, Net\u00f3n Vega, Dareyes de la Sierra, and Chino Pacas, who is riding a TikTok wave with \u201cOjitos Mentirosos,\u201d also could have fit the bill. Legacy bands touring the U.S., like Los Tigres Del Norte, Banda El Recodo, Los Recoditos, or even Banda Machos could have been options.
