Lines like that \u2014 where bravado and insecurity are locked in an endless battle of witticisms and pointed observations \u2014 abound on <em>I\u2019m Only F**king Myself<\/em>, an unflinching look at disorder that uses the fuzzed-out riffs and goopy choruses of golden-age alt-rock to cushion, but not blunt, its points.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn a way, the chaos is appropriate: Young\u2019s latest release comes in the wake of \u201cMessy,\u201d the muscular, downcast cut from her 2024 album <em>This Wasn\u2019t Meant For You Anyway<\/em>, becoming a breakout hit online, thanks to its chorus (\u201c\u2019Cause I\u2019m too messy, and then I\u2019m too fucking clean\u201d) sounding tailor-made for accompanying videos of life\u2019s more awkward moments. Stardom might cause some to clam up about their life; while Young did clean up, checking into rehab as a way of dealing with a cocaine addiction as \u201cMessy\u201d was blowing up last winter, <em>I\u2019m Only F**king Myself <\/em>shows that she won\u2019t stop letting it all hang out anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe combination of Young\u2019s ripped-from-the-text-bubbles lyrics \u2014 two of this album\u2019s songs have emoticons appended to their titles \u2014 and sour-bubblegum alt-pop is a fairly potent one, amping up the album\u2019s more unguarded moments. \u201cI guess life sucks dick, but especially if you sniff it all away,\u201d Young singsongs on \u201cNot Like That Anymore,\u201d the sinewy quasi-title track where she asserts herself to be free of past vices; \u201cI\u2019m fucking myself, but not like that anymore,\u201d she shout-sings with a wink after declaring that she\u2019s over a former situationship. \u201cYou loved me for your ego; I loved you for you,\u201d she spits at a man who\u2019s been treating her \u201clike shit on your shoes\u201d on the glimmering \u201cWalk All Over You,\u201d her multi-tracked voice wrapping its poison-pen sentiments with a bright red bow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ recirculation-modules trending-in-article lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThat\u2019s not to say that the more emotional moments don\u2019t hit: On the wrenching ballad \u201cSpiders,\u201d Young fights against the current in a doomed relationship that\u2019s clearly wrecking her; when she bellows \u201cGet in your car\/ Don\u2019t cause a scene\/ Make me feel like I\u2019m not incomplete for once,\u201d she does it with West End-level power \u2014 she, like Adele and RAYE., is a BRIT School alum \u2014 that sounds oddly sublime alongside the track\u2019s woolly rock backing. \u201cwho f**king cares?,\u201d the album\u2019s last proper song, is also its most white-knuckle; Young wrote and recorded the voice-and-guitar cut as a voice memo, and its lyrics capture the going-in-circles thoughts that often come right before someone completely gives in to anomie.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<em>I\u2019m Only F**king Myself<\/em> is carried along by Young\u2019s stark candor, which is balanced by her appealing personality all the way to the album\u2019s end, when she signs off with a cheery \u201canyway, that\u2019s the end of the album, goodbye!\u201d after being sent over the moon by a pal\u2019s freestyle.
