Some might tell their partner, \u201cI hope our kid gets your nose,\u201d but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/karly-hartzman\/\" id=\"auto-tag_karly-hartzman\" data-tag=\"karly-hartzman\">Karly Hartzman<\/a> takes it up a notch. Her lyrics are rooted in utter specificity and late-twenties realness, sounding tender and timeless across Xandy Chelmis\u2019 lap steel. \u201cI find comfort that angels don\u2019t give a damn,\u201d she sings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIf you think the honeyed ballad stands in stark contrast to the lead single on Wednesday\u2019s previous album (the ferocious, eight-minute \u201cBull Believer,\u201d from 2023\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/wednesday-rat-saw-god-1234710579\/\"><em>Rat Saw God<\/em><\/a>), that\u2019s intentional. When Wednesday guitarist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/mj-lenderman\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mj-lenderman\" data-tag=\"mj-lenderman\">MJ Lenderman<\/a> released the alt-country masterpiece <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/mj-lenderman-manning-fireworks-review-1235094784\/\"><em>Manning Fireworks<\/em><\/a> last year \u2014 and as a result rose to the level of Music Your Dad Has Heard Of \u2014 the band decided to capitalize on it, hoping to attract a wider fanbase. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DJ9Ro8jpJnq\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">It worked<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBut <em>Bleeds<\/em> \u2014 Wednesday\u2019s sixth album, made with their longtime producer, Alex Farrar \u2014 still contains the North Carolina band\u2019s original elements of fuzzy, feral shoegaze, like \u201cWasp,\u201d where Hartzman screams for a minute and 26 seconds. There\u2019s also sublime creek-rock, like the beautiful banger \u201cWound Up Here (By Holding On),\u201d which Hartzman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/wednesday-bleeds-karly-hartzman-mj-lenderman-1235418897\/\">described<\/a> as one of her favorites she\u2019s ever written (she screams on that, too). These shifting sonic landscapes, combined with Hartzman\u2019s fearless, razor-sharp lyrics, make for a wild Southern gothic odyssey \u2014 one you\u2019ll willingly take again and again, regardless of how dark it gets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAnd Wednesday want it darker. Death is casual on <em>Bleeds<\/em>, as are ghosts. \u201cYou sent my nudes around\/I never yelled at you about it cause you died,\u201d Hartzman sings on the euphoric rocker \u201cTownies\u201d (that last word sounds more like <em>dieeeee-hihiiiiii<\/em>). Hartzman weaves a patchwork quilt of delicious dread \u2014 drowned football stars are found in shallow streams, bodies lay on the road, funerals are livestreamed, and some knife safety might be in order. There\u2019s even a track titled \u201cCarolina Murder Suicide,\u201d about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-reviews\/murdaugh-murders-netflix-docuseries-alex-murdaugh-crime-south-carolina-1234683740\/\">Murdaugh trial<\/a>. \u201cDeath is around at every point,\u201d Hartzman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2025\/jun\/20\/wednesday-karly-hartzman-2025-best-alt-rock-album-interview\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>. \u201cIf you don\u2019t acknowledge that, you\u2019re lying.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHartzman is at the peak of her songwriting on <em>Bleeds<\/em>, with instantly quotable lines both profound (\u201cThe easy things in life keep getting harder everyday\u201d) and genuinely funny stoner escapades (\u201cWe watched a Phish concert and <em>Human Centipede<\/em>\/Two things I now wish I had never seen\u201d). Some lyrics, like on the Pavement-esque slacker-rock special \u201cPick Up That Knife,\u201d seem tailor-made for TikTok: \u201cGrocery store on Christmas\/Parked too close to someone to get out.\u201d And the gnawing centerpiece, \u201cCandy Breath,\u201d is the best song to mention refrigerator light since Taylor Swift\u2019s \u201cAll Too Well.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ recirculation-modules trending-in-article lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tTrending Stories<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThough it was revealed during the <em>Manning Fireworks<\/em> press cycle that Hartzman and Lenderman had ended their romantic relationship after six years, the material for <em>Bleeds <\/em>was written prior to their split. (Lenderman has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/mj-lenderman-no-longer-tour-wednesday-record-1235276361\/\">confirmed<\/a> that he\u2019s still in the band, but will no longer tour with them). It\u2019s not a breakup album, though \u201cElderberry Wine\u201d and the ultra-delicate \u201cThe Way Love Goes\u201d are about their strain. The latter positions Hartzman front and center, her vocals isolated with only a hint of guitar, as she delivers a gut-punch of emotion. \u201cI\u2019m scared to death\/There\u2019s women less\/Spoiled by your knowing,\u201d she sings. \u201cNewer and much sweeter\/Many much more patient\/With much more than I can give.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHartzman\u2019s bandmates \u2014 Lenderman, Chelmis, drummer Alan Miller, and bassist Ethan Baechtold \u2014 vetoed her original title for the album, <em>Carolina Girl<\/em>. It\u2019s a bummer, because you can feel her home, her forever muse, across the entire record, from bonfires to drives down I-40. <em>Bleeds<\/em> concludes with the sprawling \u201cGary\u2019s II,\u201d a sequel to \u201cGary\u2019s\u201d on 2021\u2019s <em>Twin Plagues<\/em>. It\u2019s a folk stunner that details a brutal bar fight that Hartzman and Lenderman\u2019s former landlord got into when he was 33 years old; dentures were needed. Though he died a few years ago, his anecdote is now sealed in Wednesday\u2019s creek rock amber, waiting to be discovered. So crack open a beer.
