\n\tFour months after news broke<\/a> that she and Jason Isbell<\/a> were divorcing, Amanda Shires<\/a> opened a pair of concerts for Isbell in Colorado. The singer-songwriter, who addresses the end of her marriage and the reclamation of her independence on her new album Nobody\u2019s Girl<\/em>, says she played the gigs simply because she always keeps her word.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey were booked early on and confirmed, and the deals were inked, as they say,\u201d Shires tells Rolling Stone<\/em> on this week\u2019s Nashville Now<\/a><\/em> podcast. \u201cI always do what I say I\u2019m going to do, always.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOnstage at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on night one<\/a> in May 2024, Shires changed the words to her song \u201cStupid Love\u201d to allude to her now ex-husband\u2019s dental work. She says she wasn\u2019t jabbing at him, but rather making an observation that Shires says was overblown.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSome of the things I said on that first show were kind of taken out of context. And Jason was there and he knew what I said and how things came across. They got sensationalized,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen I sang that song \u2018Stupid Love\u2019\u2026 I changed it that night to \u2018you\u2019re smiling so much you kissed me with your crooked teeth,\u2019\u201d she continues. \u201cThey thought I was making fun of him, but I was trying to make a separation like, I never kissed the new teeth \u2014 I kissed the old teeth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShires releases Nobody\u2019s Girl<\/em> on Friday, Sept. 26. \u201cThe past two years of my life have made it to where I feel like I can talk about anything, at this point,\u201d she told Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> earlier this year. \u201cI have always used music as a way to explain what\u2019s going on in my life to myself. And it was a big transition to go from, you know, having been in a marriage for a long time and to suddenly find that I\u2019m not. It takes a lot of learning and self-reflection and, for me, a lot of time to process.\u201d<\/p>\n
