Last week, on September 18, Yasmin Williams<\/a> performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Despite having previously had a heated email exchange<\/a> with Kennedy Center president Richard Grenell, Williams said<\/a> that she felt it was important to play \u201cthe show for all the Kennedy Center staff who formed their own union and are still working there, fighting to maintain the institution\u2019s integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n During the concert, which took place<\/a> at the Washington, D.C., center\u2019s Millennium Stage, Williams was heckled by an organized group of Log Cabin Republicans, she said<\/a> online. \u201cDuring my Kennedy Center show on Thursday night, a group of Tr*mp supporters boo\u2019d me when I mentioned Ric Grenell and seemed to be there to intimidate me,\u201d Williams wrote on social media. She also shared screenshots of an apparent email sent out by Andrew Minik, the president of the group\u2019s Washington, D.C., chapter, imploring members to \u201cmake sure the audience is filled with patriots!\u201d<\/p>\n During her show, which is available to watch in full below, Williams reiterated her support for Kennedy Center staff and criticized the organization\u2019s board of trustees, a group that was put together by President Donald J. Trump after he made himself<\/a> the center\u2019s new chairman.<\/p>\n \u201cI do not support the new board at all; I don\u2019t support anyone affiliated with them; I don\u2019t support anyone affiliated with the Trump administration at all\u2014especially you, Ric Grenell,\u201d Williams said. \u201cI am not a fan of yours at all.\u201d Applause and boos can be heard in the video, too.<\/p>\n After the show, Williams wrote on social media<\/a> that her \u201csafety was threatened\u201d and that security \u201cescorted [her] to [her] car to keep [her] safe.\u201d She also told Washingtonian<\/em><\/a> about the apparent hecklers. \u201cThey booed and heckled me,\u201d she said. \u201cThey tried to derail my concert, but fortunately they were outnumbered.\u201d<\/p>\n
