Undeterred, scores of people took to the streets again this summer to mark the one-year anniversary of the initial mobilization and decry persistent police brutality, corruption, and a prolonged cost-of-living crisis. Just as this recent wave of protests was receding, leaving behind deep concern and uncertainty, one of the country\u2019s most beloved bands \u2014 Just a Band \u2014 was staging a reunion at a party celebrating analytical webzine Africa Is a Country\u2019s first print anthology. Fittingly, that issue is all about the past 15 years of protest on the continent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBlending dance, hip-hop, funk, and more, the experimental outfit Just a Band, and their leader, Blinky Bill, have often had political undertones, as heard on their 2009 track \u201cHa-He.\u201d With a music video often credited as the country\u2019s first viral one, some of \u201cHa-He\u201d took aim at the Kenyan establishment. \u201cThere\u2019s a part of the song where it says [in Swahili], loosely translated, \u2018The government doesn\u2019t care.\u2019 So, for me, I\u2019d rather get myself a really good dog for protection,\u201d Bill tells me.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1024px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  lrv-u-border-a-2\">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((576\/1024)*100%);\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-flex lrv-u-flex-direction-column lrv-u-align-items-center\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase lrv-a-font-body-xs lrv-u-margin-t-050 lrv-u-text-align-center\">Shem Obara*<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMany years later, as a soloist, Bill had a more foreboding take, like on his 2023 song \u201cDracula.\u201d \u201cIt was kind of foreshadowing what was happening,\u201d Bill says, reflecting on the last year of protest. \u201cIt\u2019s just like, \u2018If the government and the powers that be don\u2019t really listen to us, then we also will not listen to them.\u2019\u201d This year\u2019s protests swelled tensely across some major Kenyan cities, where some saw government buildings set ablaze, even more police brutality, and ultimately at least 50 more deaths, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/07\/africa\/kenya-police-prodemocracy-protests-intl\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">according to<\/a> the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights. Embattled President William Ruto attempted to stifle news of the dissent, halting live television broadcasts of the melee until Nairobi\u2019s High Court intervened<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cOne of the bittersweet things that have come out of the whole protest is how it has spiked a lot of creativity,\u201d says Mutinda Kilonzo, who helps lead Qwani, a Nairobi-based youth arts collective. Qwani members introduced me to music like \u201cMaandamano,\u201d by beloved Kenyan singer Bien, featuring rapper Breeder LW, roughly 10 years his junior at 28 years old. Bien is best known as the frontman of Sauti Sol, one of the continent\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/biggest%20bands.\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">biggest bands<\/a>, which he\u2019s spent 20 years shepherding. Though \u201cMaandamano\u201d was released on YouTube last July, it was brought to streaming services this summer as the June 25 protest anniversary approached. Breeder boasts that their brood is \u201ctribeless\u201d and \u201cpartyless\u201d with bass and a matter-of-fact confidence. Meanwhile, each breathy \u201cmaandamano\u201d Bien croons on the choir-backed chorus feels like a drop of kerosene on the fiery spirit of the protesters. With the jazzy bounce of laid-back Afrobeats \u2014 likely spreading its message even further \u2014 \u201cMaandamano\u201d is also filled with visceral sound bites from the demonstrations, from impassioned chants of \u201cRuto must go\u201d to a senator asking \u201cHow do you tear-gas a baddie?\u201d while seemingly praising the protesters on Kenyan television. To date, \u201cMaandamano\u201d has been played more than 2.3 million times on YouTube.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tMeanwhile, Kenyan rapper Octopizzo\u2019s \u201cJune 25th,\u201d released to commemorate the lives lost when demonstrators stormed Parliament in Nairobi last year, takes a much more somber tone with its sad, twinkling synths and moody guitar. His gravelly croak sounds melodic but grave. The tempo supports his rapid-fire bars, though, balancing heartbreak over those slain with conviction for their cause. In his song \u201cRisasi ya Mguu,\u201d popular TikToker Arnold Malcolm satirizes Ruto\u2019s now-infamous advice that police shoot alleged vandals in the legs during protests. In one video liked more than 56,000 times on TikTok, children dance to the song by limping to its twangy beat, convulsing with rolled eyes and dangling tongues.
