Daniel Ek will step aside as Spotify\u2019s chief executive officer in January to become executive chair, the streaming giant announced today (September 30). From January 1, 2026, two current senior officers\u2014Gustav S\u00f6derstr\u00f6m, currently co-president and chief product and technology officer, and Alex Norstr\u00f6m, co-president and chief business officer\u2014will become co-CEOs of Spotify, reporting to Ek. They are also set to join the company\u2019s board of directors, pending shareholder approval.<\/p>\n
The company likened Ek\u2019s new role to that of a European company\u2019s chair, with power to determine capital allocation, plot Spotify\u2019s long-term direction, and support the senior team. The change, Spotify added, formalizes how it has operated since 2023, \u201cwith the co-presidents largely leading strategic development and operational execution of Spotify.\u201d<\/p>\n
In his own statement, Ek, who founded Spotify in 2006, stressed that he has already \u201cturned over a large part of the day-to-day management and strategic direction of Spotify to Alex and Gustav\u201d and that the \u201cchange simply matches titles to how we already operate.\u201d<\/p>\n
None of the statements made reference to recent controversy surrounding Ek\u2019s investment in the weapons contractor Helsing, which has prompted an exodus of artists from the platform including Hotline TNT<\/a>, Godspeed You! Black Emperor<\/a>, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard<\/a>, Xiu Xiu<\/a>, Deerhoof<\/a>, Deradoorian<\/a>, and\u2014if they succeed in pulling their music\u2014Massive Attack<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
