When artists get their first invitation to come perform a show at the hallowed venue \u2014 and later, when they earn official membership \u2014 it&#8217;s likely to be one of the most special moments in their careers.<\/p>\n<p>However, not every country star maintains an entirely rosy relationship with the Opry throughout their whole career.<\/p>\n<p>Over the decades, multiple performers have been asked to leave the stage for one reason or another, either for violating the venue&#8217;s unspoken behavioral code of conduct, or for failing to live up to the official expectations for membership.<\/p>\n<h3>Who&#8217;s Been Banned From the Grand Ole Opry?<\/h3>\n<p>During an Opry-mounted tribute show at Nashville&#8217;s Ryman Auditorium called <em>Opry Goes Dolly<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 a celebration of <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/tags\/dolly-parton\" target=\"_blank\">Dolly Parton<\/a>&#8216;s 78th birthday in 2024 \u2014 performer <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/tags\/elle-king\" target=\"_blank\">Elle King<\/a> generated outrage when she <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/elle-king-drunk-grand-ole-opry-dolly-parton-tribute\/\" target=\"_blank\">stepped onstage visibly drunk<\/a>, told the audience she was &#8220;f&#8211;king hammered,&#8221; entered into lightly combative banter with concertgoers and forgot the words to Parton&#8217;s &#8220;Marry Me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"branded-app-shortcode-inarticle\">\n<div class=\"logo-wrap\" rel=\"fwef\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The venue apologized to\u00a0those offended by King&#8217;s language, but on social media, many fans of the Opry insisted that an apology should come from King herself \u2014 and even that her behavior warranted a ban from the Grand Ole Opry stage.<\/p>\n<p>King did eventually apologize, but she has yet to return to the Opry stage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/tags\/johnny-cash\" target=\"_blank\">Johnny Cash<\/a> was banned from the Opry after an explosive 1973 show where he smashed stage lights with a microphone stand, and alcohol was a large factor in that incident.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the Opry&#8217;s most famous banned artist,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/tags\/hank-williams\" target=\"_blank\">Hank Williams<\/a>,\u00a0got his membership axed because of his drunkenness and unreliability. <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/tags\/jerry-lee-lewis\" target=\"_blank\">Jerry Lee Lewis<\/a> was booted from the Opry stage for (among other offenses) dropping an F-bomb live on air.<\/p>\n<p>But crucially, there&#8217;s only one example of a singer whose ban from the Opry was total and permanent \u2014 and it wasn&#8217;t the venue&#8217;s decision to keep his ban in place forever.<\/p>\n<p>Read on for a deep dive into the stars who&#8217;ve been banned from the Opry stage \u2014 and the behavior that got them ousted!<\/p>\n<div class=\"photogallery-wrapper blog-photogallery \">\n<h2 class=\"photogallery-title\">6 Stars Banned by the Grand Ole Opry (and Why They Got the Boot)<\/h2>\n<div class=\"photogallery-description\">\n<p>Just because the Grand Ole Opry invites you to perform on their stage once doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s necessarily an open invitation. Why?<\/div>\n<p>That answer is often difficult to determine, but this list of stars you won&#8217;t believe aren&#8217;t members suggests reasons where appropriate. <\/p>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opry.com\/artists\/membership\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Membership<\/a> into the Grand Ole Opry comes with an obligation to play the show frequently, but that&#8217;s often set aside (Barbara Mandrell is an inactive member, for example).
