In addition to his 2010 memoir <em>I Am Ozzy<\/em> there\u2019s a 1998 episode of VH1\u2019s <em>Behind the Music<\/em>, the 2011 documentary <em>God Bless Ozzy Osbourne<\/em>, the 2020 documentary<em> Biography: The Nine Lives of Ozzy Osbourne<\/em>, countless articles and books, and the Paramount+ documentary <em>Ozzy: No Escape From Now<\/em>, which chronicles Ozzy\u2019s painful last years and his quest to play one final concert. Osbourne <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/ozzy-osbourne-black-sabbath-dead-obituary-1227265\/\">died<\/a> in July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIf you\u2019ve encountered even some of them, you know the broad strokes: working-class upbringing in Birmingham, laying the groundwork for heavy metal as the frontman of Black Sabbath, fucking it all up due to psychotic levels of excess, meeting wife\/manager Sharon at a low point, rebuilding his career as a solo star in the early Eighties with help from guitarist Randy Rhoads, the tragic accident that killed Rhoads, <em>No More Tears<\/em>, Ozzfest, the reality show, brutal injuries and addiction issues, and his uncanny ability to somehow survive it all until his body began failing him in 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt might seem like there\u2019s not much story left to tell, especially when you factor in <em>No Escape From Now<\/em> and its many revelations. But Osbourne spent the final years of his life working with his <em>I Am Ozzy<\/em> collaborator Chris Ayres on a follow-up memoir entitled <em>Last Rites<\/em>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Last-Rites-Ozzy-Osbourne\/dp\/1538775417?asc_source=web&amp;asc_campaign=web&amp;asc_refurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rollingstone.com%2Fmusic%2Fmusic-features%2Fozzy-osbourne-last-rites-book-things-we-learned-1235439275%2F\">which arrives this week<\/a>. It focuses largely on the difficult final chapter of his life and the numerous medical setbacks he faced, but it also flashes back to encounters with Keith Moon, Bon Scott, Steve Marriott, and other long-departed rock icons. Here\u2019s 14 things we learned.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"a-vegas-residency-was-in-the-works\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\tA Vegas residency was in the works.\t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBack in 2018, Ozzy launched the No More Tours II tour. The plan was to finally retire from the road when it wrapped. (As the title suggests, this was his <em>second<\/em> farewell tour.) I dream about Guinness almost every night. I fucking love the stuff, it\u2019s like drinking a glass of pudding. The problem is, one\u2019s too many, and ten\u2019s not enough. And the first thing I want after a Guinness is to go looking for some coke. Cocaine\u2019s the alcoholic\u2019s best friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"steroids-also-became-a-problem\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\tSteroids also became a problem. \t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOn the farewell tour, Ozzy began using the steroid Decadron to treat vocal inflammation. It didn\u2019t take long for him to become hopelessly addicted. He even began suffering from \u2018roid rages that resulted in a black eye. \u201cSharon got heavy with me after that,\u201d Ozzy writes. \u201cShe hired this military guy with a neck wider than the Watford Gap to come and watch over me. Where she found this bloke, I\u2019ve no idea. I mean, I liked being in <em>The Osbournes,<\/em> but I hated working in TV. It\u2019s a vipers\u2019 nest, TV, it really is. It\u2019s not like being in music. You\u2019ve got no friends in TV. The rivalry\u2019s off the charts. Everyone just wants what you\u2019ve got, it\u2019s so phony all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"he-was-thrilled-when-it-ended\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\tHe was thrilled when it ended. \t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cFor us, by the end of our run, we all were desperate to get our lives back,\u201d Ozzy writes. \u201cJack was on drugs. Kelly was on drugs. I was sneaking up to my room to smoke weed at every opportunity. Then Sharon got cancer. The toll was bad, man. My poor wife was so sick, it took her the longest time to get over that. It took all of us a long time to come down from the high of the show, the stress of it \u2026 to go from reality TV to actual reality again. I\u2019d crank it up on my boombox if I was by a swimming pool. And at all other times \u2013 other than when I was on stage \u2013 I\u2019d be singing one of the songs from it at the top of my voice. It got to the point where [my security guard] couldn\u2019t take it any more. It broke him, that record. Okay.\u2019 The door opens, and this guy\u2019s standing there packing heat. Meanwhile, there are two blokes behind him, and they\u2019re also packing heat. And I\u2019m like, fucking hell, I should have been a bit more polite.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"he-didn-t-care-much-for-david-lee-roth\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\tHe didn\u2019t care much for David Lee Roth. \t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tVan Halen famously opened up for Black Sabbath in 1978. Ozzy loved Eddie Van Halen, but didn\u2019t care much for the group\u2019s frontman. \u201cHe was like Mr. Showbiz,\u201d Ozzy writes. \u201cAlways smiling. Never unhappy. He comes from a well-to-do family, I believe, maybe that\u2019s why we had nothing in common. You also never knew if he was spinning you a load of bullshit or telling you something for real. One minute he\u2019s saying he\u2019s getting his law degree, the next he\u2019s saying he\u2019s a part-time paramedic. There\u2019s a story going around that the two of us had a \u2018cocaine duel\u2019 during that tour \u2013 meaning, who could snort the most coke before they keeled over. I mean, it\u2019s possible it happened. But I doubt it. I mean, there was a documentary about him, <em>Beware of Mr. Baker<\/em>, where he broke the director\u2019s nose with a metal cane at his house in South Africa. And that was after the guy had been thrown out of every other country. Not that he would have taken the job anyway. He was nuts. Brad even called me up and said, \u2018Why don\u2019t you want me to do this gig?\u2019 All I could say was, \u2018Brad, if you were Tommy, and you\u2019d been there for all the writing, and Rick had wanted you gone, how would you feel?\u2019 He had no answer to that. There wasn\u2019t an answer. The truth was, Brad did good work on the album. But in my mind, Tommy should have been there all along, and he deserved to be on the tour. At the same time, I\u2019ll admit I was just so used to doing my own thing and having my own band it was really hard to not be in control. Maybe that\u2019s why the atmosphere on stage never felt that great\u2026 The album and the tour were successful beyond what any of us could ever have dreamed of. But it would have been so much better if it had been friendly, and if we\u2019d had Bill there. Tommy did a great job on the drums, don\u2019t get me wrong. But he\u2019d be the first to admit he ain\u2019t Bill and never could be.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"he-finally-made-peace-with-bill-ward-via-text\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\tHe finally made peace with Bill Ward via text. \t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAfter exchanging very sharp barbs in the press, Ozzy and Ward didn\u2019t communicate for a full decade. They finally got back in touch when Ward learned about Ozzy\u2019s injury in 2019. \u201cI ain\u2019t ashamed to say I shed a tear when I spoke to Bill,\u201d Ozzy writes. \u201c\u2018We may have all got ripped off, Bill,\u2019 I said, \u2018but our lives were forever changed by what we did.\u2019 \u2018I know, Ozzy, I know,\u2019 he said. \u2018We\u2019re lucky guys. We can\u2019t complain.\u2019 \u2018I love you, y\u2019know,\u2019 I told him. It went very quiet for a moment on the line. \u2018I love you too, Ozzy, you fucking lunatic.\u2019 That\u2019s one of the great things about getting older. Even if you\u2019re a working-class guy from Aston, you stop being as scared of showing your emotions. Because you know that if you wait too long to tell someone how much they mean to you, the chance might never come around again.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"he-d-rather-not-talk-about-his-infidelity\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\tHe\u2019d rather not talk about his infidelity. \t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn 2016, credible reports hit the tabloids that Ozzy was engaged in an affair with his hair colorist. He doesn\u2019t get into any specifics or names, but he admits that he wasn\u2019t faithful to Sharon during this time. \u201cSharon had every right to dump me when she found out what was going on,\u201d he writes. \u2018I\u2019d become addicted to sex, basically. It was no different than when I was addicted to booze, pills, cigars, ice cream or Yorkshire fucking tea\u2026I was a bad guy. I fucked around for a while. I broke my wife\u2019s heart, and I\u2019m lucky she forgave me. I just hope all the people I hurt know how sorry I am \u2013 including the kids, who were badly affected. It was just a close approximation.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"near-the-end-of-his-life-scam-artists-took-advantage-of-ozzy-s-fragile-state\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\tNear the end of his life, scam artists took advantage of Ozzy\u2019s fragile state. \t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cFirst was a guy in Canada who said if we paid him $170,000 he\u2019d put me through a new kind of CAT scan, which could show everything that was wrong with me,\u201d Ozzy writes. \u201cSo Sharon wired him the money and we went over to his clinic.
