Bryan has once again found himself in the middle of the culture wars \u2014 and this time with an old-fashioned protest song that\u2019s irked MAGA fans and even the federal Department of Homeland Security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOver the weekend, Bryan released a portion of that new tune, called \u201cBad News,\u201d on his social media feeds. The minute-long excerpt \u2014 written solely by Bryan, a source close to the artist confirms to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> \u2014 opens with bristly guitar strums before Bryan starts singing in what appears to be the voice of someone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/political-commentary\/veterans-not-exempt-ice-terror-campaign-1235436075\/\">detained by ICE<\/a>: \u201cI heard the cops came, cocky motherfuckers, ain\u2019t they?\u201d goes part of one verse, followed by a more specific commentary: \u201cAnd <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/ice\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ice\" data-tag=\"ice\">ICE<\/a> is gonna come bust down your door\/Try to build a house no one builds no more\/But I got a telephone\/Kids are all scared and all alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn the last part of the snippet, Bryan sings, \u201cThe bars stopped bumping, the rock stopped rolling, the middle fingers rising\/And it won\u2019t stop showing\/Got some bad news\/The fading of the red, white, and blue.\u201d With that, the song, which had been building to a crescendo, fades, leaving both the listener and the narrator in uneasy limbo.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Zach Bryan - Bad News [Unreleased] \" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HE52kHayh6c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAccording to a source at Bryan\u2019s label, a finished version of \u201cBad News\u201d doesn\u2019t yet have a release date, and until we hear the entire song, it\u2019s hard to say where it will go lyrically (although that portion gives a pretty good idea). <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tStill, the MAGA wing of Bryan\u2019s fanbase and even a few of his fellow artists are not amused by his critique of police officers and ICE agents. \u201cZach Bryan has every right to record a song bashing law enforcement, and fans have every right to keep supporting his career, or not,\u201d wrote Big &amp; Rich\u2019s John Rich, adding, sarcastically, \u201c\u2026 Who knows, maybe there\u2019s a large \u2018anti law enforcement\u2019 wing of the country music fanbase. It has also elicited supportive comments like: \u201cNothing more American, more country music than telling the Federal government to f\u2013k off\u201d; \u201cOur country needs this right now Zach please release this\u201d; and \u201cSo proud of you Zach. Music is the ultimate weapon against fascism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBryan has mostly been down-the-middle when it comes to his political views. In 2023, he and Nineties country vet Travis Tritt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country\/zach-bryan-travis-tritt-twitter-bud-light-1234716452\/\">got into a back-and-forth<\/a> over transgender rights. (Tritt vowed to have Bud Light removed from his backstage rider after the company featured a trans influencer in an ad; Bryan wrote, \u201cI just think insulting transgender people is completely wrong because we live in a country where we can all just be who we want to be.\u201d) Later the two met at a festival and \u201ctalked for an hour and a half,\u201d Bryan posted at the time. \u201cWe disagree on some things and agree on some things and it seems the world did not end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tLast year, Bryan spoke to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/bruce-springsteen-zach-bryan-songwriting-country-music-america-1235126859\/\">for a cover story<\/a> with one of his heroes, Bruce Springsteen, and went out of his way to stick to the political middle. \u201cI\u2019m neither one way or the other,\u201d he said, going on to talk about his past military service. \u201cI served my country for eight, nine years. I think America ebbs and flows, and it always has. Always will. I\u2019m tired of everyone arguing. It\u2019s about time people were just thankful to be American. \u2019Cause personally, I\u2019m so grateful I get to wake up in a country that\u2019s free.
