To celebrate his life and legacy, we joined Prine\u2019s widow Fiona Whelan Prine and country music legend Carlene Carter at one the late songwriter\u2019s favorite Nashville haunts: Brown\u2019s Diner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tTucked into a booth in the dining room, Fiona Prine and Carter recount the creation of Prine\u2019s 1995 <em>Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings<\/em> album, which was recently reissued as a 30th anniversary edition via Prine\u2019s Oh Boy Records label. Carter, who was dating the album\u2019s producer, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers\u2019 bassist Howie Epstein, at the time, sang on the album and was there for all its twists and turns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThere was always a twist, you would think he was going to a certain word and it\u2019d be a completely different word,\u201d Carter says. \u201cI just wanted to crawl in his brain.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"John Prine&#039;s &#039;Lost Dogs&#039; and Legacy | Rolling Stone Nashville Now\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NK3LV5qJpUE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBoth women agree that there\u2019d be a wealth of topical songs today, were Prine still alive. Fiona Prine says her husband saw the direction the country was headed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cBefore John passed I could see a despondency in him about what was happening in America. There was vitriol. And he said, that\u2019s not who we are.
